  • Aw thanks Mrs M...it was fantastic...such a great way to raise funds.

So...I'm a member of quite a few money saving pages on the book of face and there was a query yesterday from a young lady who said she was renting a flat and was stuck in a rental trap unable to save for a mortgage and asking for advice..
So I suggested that she move to a shared house for a few months and pay a much cheaper rent, get a second job and work in a bar or something ...I explained these were all things I had done when I was her age to buy my first house and her reply was that it wasn't safe to live in a shared house and that she had a life and couldn't be expected to work 2 jobs and be tired and not be able to go out! I pointed out that it was just short term and I had done all these things and lived to tell the tale and she said I was a sad case with no life...or words to that effect! Charming!
I'm so glad we have this wonderful support on here from like minded people!

I hope you reminded her as a sad case with no life, she is the one on the forums complaining, not you :rotfl:

As harsh as it sounds, if you want a mortgage, for most people, you either make the sacrifices now, or you make them later...but ultimately sooner the better.
Did you let her know in 10 years time, her rent would of gone up on by something like a 3rd and your mortgage would of dropped by a 3rd. That while she is downsizing to pay the bills in future years, you will be sitting pretty on a property that on average is earning a yearly value of between 6 and 15K per year, before mortgage payments are even taken into accounts?

I wouldn't be able to resist rubbing her nose in it a bit.
  • I was very polite back actually but I wish I'd had more of a dig...if I'd overpayed my mortgage at 22, when I got divorced I would have been able to buy my ex out and still had a low mortgage instead of the huge one I have now ..but hey shoulda woulda coulda and she'll learn the hard way!

My boiler is making a horrendous groaning noise...I'm a bit concerned..the internet said it's got air in it but I'm going to ask the plumber to come this week and have a look I think! Unless any of you has a bright idea?!

Still battling the lurgy,no real news apart from that!

Liar was good last night too!

  • It's frustrating when people purport to want advice but then are full of reasons why they can't do whatever. It's the same when people complain about the job they are in, or the amount of weight they "want" to lose, or to give up smoking.....some people genuinely want to make changes and accept that there are things they will need to do differently, and that it might be hard at times to get to their goals, but others are just full of what they really think are proper reasons for not even trying.

I guess that at all times we've been given advice we poo-pooed at the time but that we wish we had taken further down the line. She'll be one of those!

    Hello Sleepygirl,

I've just stumbled across your diary and thought I'd pop in to say hello.
I'm a single, [STRIKE]late[/STRIKE] 30s, something Mum with a little boy. I've been dabbling in overpaying the mortgage but just getting rid of the last bit of debt before I start throwing eveything at overpaying the mortgage, hopefully by the end of the year. :D

Woud love to stick around and follow your journey, hopefully some of your motivation will rub off on me!

That girl on Fb sounds so annoying lol. As others have said, some folk like to moan about how hard it is for them, as if somehow other people got a magic wand and we haven't made hard choices.

We too have done extra at work for overtime money, taken second jobs, not bought things we wanted to as we were prioritising saving etc but that gets overlooked when people can say 'but it was easier for you because....' and justify that to themsemselves why it's too hard.

You must have wished you'd saved your pixels and hadn't even tried to help. Maybe she wanted advice like "here's the winning lottery numbers poor lamb don't lift a finger to help yourself":rotfl:

I think you are probably right there!
  • Better and Daisy...your comments made me hoot!! You're right she's one of the 'it's alright for some brigade' and will probably be moaning in 20 years time that she's still in the same boat!! Yes Daisy I've had 'it's easier for you' too...
Firegirl and MeandO thank you...this forum is so helpful and I'll ge looking forward to seeing your adventures too! I just muddle along!!

So last night I was DS free so my neighbour popped in for a coffee and bought a huge Pyrex dish of mac and cheese left over from a party which I portioned up and froze...I'd also made a huge chilli for DS so I portioned and froze that too...he's got enough food for a month I think! I popped over to see my friend too for coffee and we nattered for an hour and set the world to rights! It was fab...cost hardly anything and I socialised all evening! It recharges my batteries to see the girls as I'm so busy with the business and DS!

'saved your pixels' made me laugh Daisy!

As others have said, some people want it all on a plate. I really dislike the sense of entitlement some people seem to carry around with them these days. (Gosh, that makes me sound old!!!).

:j << to free mac 'n' cheese and close-by friends for coffee. Wish I had neighbours to bring me such goodies and 'locals' for coffee catch ups! My neighbours are a pretty anti-social bunch unfortunately, the majority of them don't even reply to a cheery wave or hello and friends are non-existent in this area unfortunately. Still, I have it better than many so can't complain!

Let's hope your DS doesn't go off chilli in the next month... :rotfl:
Love batch cooking, just need more time and a bigger freezer to do much here!
