Husband has a Tesco clubcard as he nips into Tesco Express for chewing gum and the odd tin of soup or pot of yogurt. He hasn't been offered any vouchers yet.

Spend £140/£150 a week at Tesco seems a heck of a lot of money, to me.

Two of us eating organic if we can get it otherwise wild/additive free and including toiletries, laundry and cleaning stuff and things like loo rolls and foil... total weekly spend using combo of Ocado Abel & Cole, Sainsbury's, Riverford and Iceland (not all of them every week) comes in at under £100 pw.

It's impossible, in my experience, even in big Tesco Extra stores open 24/7 for me to spend £100 in a shop on organic food. Sometimes Tesco doesn't even have more than organic courgettes, bananas and carrots.

I'm not wanting to stir here, but in my experience, shopping around saves money providing it doesn't cost you more to get to the store than you'd save.

If you can't be bothered to plan and say nip into store X on the return school run as you pass it or store Y when passing it on way back from zumba, yup you're losing out.

The difference between a Burgen loaf in Waitrose and Iceland is 50p. Same loaf, same weight. One loaf per week = saving of £26 per year buying in Iceland not Waitrose. That's one month's waste water bill for us on just one item.

*Edited to add* Reading through this post, it might seem like I'm directing it entirely at you, Edwardia, and that isn't the case. It's more a reflection of my general frustrations reading through this entire thread. It just seems like there's been more discussion about how people are choosing to do their shopping, rather than the voucher itself and whether it's a good deal or not. So apologies if this comes over confrontational; I didn't mean it that way.

But people may also be stocking up on items like alcohol and presents for Christmas, so it's not all about food. There also seems to be some confusion about whether the voucher applies to gift cards, so reaching that amount may not be so tricky.

And for heaven's sake, some people just spend more on their groceries than others. Nothing wrong with that.

Except that's not taking into account what a person's time is worth to them. Everyone has to put a value on their time, and decide whether or not a particular saving is worth the time spent. Maybe a small saving is worth it, if they find the activity enjoyable (making bread rather than buying their own, for instance). If it's something they would find agonisingly awful, then they may decide that amount of money isn't worth the stress/effort.

And that is entirely up to the person/people setting the budget and doing the shopping. No one else.

Or you could stop buying bread, make your own all the time, and save even more.

Don't want to make your own bread all the time? That's fine: not everyone wants to shop around. Live and let live, people.

And frankly, this whole argument is pretty ablist. You're assuming that people are able physically and mentally to expend the effort necessary to do the extra planning, the extra journeys, etc etc. You're not taking into account the utter exhaustion some people experience when shopping if they suffer from a disability, or how stressful it can be shopping with a small child in tow.

And not everyone has a car. I don't; I walk and occasionally use the bus.

Look, I think it's valid to question how good a deal this is. I'm dubious myself, but if people can make it work for them, great. But if a person doesn't consider the extra money saved from shopping around worth the extra effort, that's their prerogative, and no one has the right to tell them that they're wrong.

Me too, got it in the post today, £70 off a £130 shop. :-)
  • Received mine today £30 off £60 spend. Hopefully will be able to use my £4 off £40 spend and £6 off a £40 spend on alcohol at the same time to bring it down to£20 . I seem to have vouchers coming out of my ears at the moment. An Aldi £5 off £40 spend and Sainsbobs has sent me £8 vouchers off £30 spends. At this rate I will only need fresh food throughout January .

For those of you who haven't received their voucher yet ...

I logged an enquiry on the Clubcard site last night, and got a call back this morning. I was told that there had been some difficulties with issuing the vouchers in time for a Christmas spend. I was then told that I would receive a Moneycard instead of a voucher, but in 7-10 days (i.e. after Christmas, though I didn't clarify).

That's a win-win in my eyes! I was wondering how I'd manage to spend my threshold of £150 in just one shop to be able to use the "£75 off" voucher ... But I can use the moneycard at any time for any size shop :)

  • I spent the amount required each week and hadn't received my coupon so I emailed Tesco Clubcard to politely ask where mine was. I received a reply from them saying that I hadn't met the required spend.

I looked on their own website and found that it gives a detailed record for all my clubcard transactions. With a very quick check, it was obvious that I had met the required spend. I wonder why Tesco lied to me...
There is no excuse for rudeness. Ignorance on the other hand is excusable – you don’t know what you’re talking about.

But when you checked the transactions, did you minus the ones for fuel? And also for 'Direct'?
