re-reading the OP I note that your partner has only been there 2 weeks and you state that the person in question regularly rants and raves and bullies the employees, but yesterday was the first time they made derogatory comments about Eastern Europeans in one of their rants.

So when was a complaint made and how much time have you given for action to be taken? You now make out that this is a regular occurrence and management have done nothing about it.

I think you have jumped the gun a bit here. Yes your partner may have been deeply upset at the rant comments yesterday and rightly so but she should follow procedure and allow management to address her concerns.

This is the end of her third week and the issues over shouting and racial comments were made at the end of week one. It has happened again but the direct references to where she is from occurred yesterday after she transferred a phone call to the said member of staff.

Anyway, this is not the type of issue that relates to how long you have been somewhere it is about respecting basic norms of behaviour.

Everywhere I worked this type of behaviour would be gross misconduct, suspension and likely dismissal.

She wants the pay and for something to be done about this person as it is obviously wrong. I suggested that the issue is perhaps wider in context if the management does not act. Sure, I am preempting that they won't and if they do (meaning I will be pleasantly surprised) then that will be that.

    Good idea.

I've recently read an ACAS report about bullying and verbal abuse of ethnic minority workers in the catering industry. It discussed how the workers were reluctant to report such matters to the police as they didn't want to cause trouble.

The report concluded that more support should be given to employees and employers in these cases.

  • The management defended her saying this person was valuable but sometimes 'embarrassed herself as she could not control her temper'.

They said that of course they are an international company and are not racist.

They agreed to pay my gf for the time worked.

They will not reprimand this person. They are acknowledging that this is acceptable for them because she brings in clients/money and said that it will probably happen again.

If what you are saying is true I suggest your girlfriend asks for confirmation in writing from the employer that they condone the employee making racist slurs/remarks and will not reprimand or stop her. Take the letter to the authorities.

Whether the authorities is the police or a government department I don't know but you can probably find out from ACAS.

I've been racialy abused in the work place for being in a mixed race relationship, it wasn't subtle, it was shouting in an open office area that clients walk through and was done in front of senior staff.

However the attitude was that it was 'a joke' and 'you know what hes like' etc.

I conculded that because he was gay and had a very domineering personailty they were scared to address it. That not every office worker is equal, some get to do what they want because there bullys, and that how it is unfortuantly.

I sorted it out by telling everyone everthing he said untill ge got moved as far away from me as possible 'as part of a general shake up'

They are not so stupid as to put it in writing. Of course it is a new employees word against a the manager and director of the company.

There might be a way to get a response in writing of the situation but they will not implicate themselves further.

Still the complaint to the British Council who accredits them might add to an investigation/audit. It is the situation whereby if enough people make a complaint something will be done, mainly through bad publicity and exposure of the way they treat staff.

Addressing vile and racist attitudes in a work place which led to my partner losing her job over it. I won't let them get away with it.

Your partner never lost her job, she resigned.
