Would you name your child the same as your pet?

Hi everyone,

We have a little boy called Henry (22 months) and we are having another boy due end of Feb.

We have 3 cats called Abigail, George and Freddie.

Now we are thinking of a nice name that goes with Henry. And got stuck a few times. I have loved the name George for years so called our first (as a couple) pets George and Abi (same litter) and they are 6 years old now.

I think George will go lovely with Henry and our surname but of course he is the name of our pet.

Same days say yes, others no as that is his name and he is still alive so not like in memory or anything.

Looking online and its a 50/50 split but most say no if its a dog etc. The cats are part of our family and another thing it might be confusing for the baby and Henry.

Any thoughts on this? And if someone has a suggestion of a name feel free to post. (No Thomas or other engines please :) )

    That's quite amusing!

If I were you, call your son George. And whilst the cat is living, either change George (son) or George (pet) into a Georgie, or G, or GG, or Gay-orge or some other version of George.

Or just change the cats name altogether - it won't make that much difference and Henry will adapt.

I wouldn't worry, most kids get used to their mum calling them by the dog's name - and vice versa.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
  • We had this problem when my mum was pregnant with my bro many moons ago, we all loved the rabbits name, and wanted to call the baby by that name, in the end we gave the rabbit a new name and by bro got the rabbits name! All these years later nobody except me and my siblings remember the story and my bro has a lovely name :)

I think you'd be crazy to do that to be honest! it's just going to make life difficult . You will come up with another name you love for your baby:)

I know a woman , had two little girls, sad story, one died aged ten . They got a cat for the other child, child named it after her sister. Very difficult for all concerned. Then the cat too died , only a year old, from cancer.
    It was so stressful.

Do cats even have any awareness of what their name is? For the amount of notice my old cat use to take when I called it I would think not. Change the cats name and use George for your child. If you really don't wish to do that then how about Arthur as an alternative name. Traditional and goes quite nicely with Henry.

What about William? William and Henry worked for the Royals!

George (cat) has no clue what his name is and he is 7. I think with a dog it is different as most know their names.

It just feels really strange, but we have time as got a few months to decide on a name.

William might get on the list. We not sure about Oliver too but it's coming too popular at the moment, which i assume George will too (As royal baby)

Also, given the Royal baby George will inevitably spark a craze for the name this year for babies amongst the unimaginative copycat parents, are you happy that he might be one of several Georges once he gets to school and as he goes through life?

    I probably wouldn't, no.

You might be thankful if you decide not to you, I can imagine there will be an awful lot of Georges over the next year or so.

  • Yes, DS1 has the second name Oliver, in memory of a fun-loving, character of a hamster we once had.:o
