Windows 8.1 a hero or a zero

Within the last couple of weeks, I've upgraded my Mac to Mavericks 10.9 (from Mountain Lion 10.8) and my PC from Windows 8 to 8.1.
They both require downloading a DVD's worth, how long that takes depends on your internet speed.
After that, again it depends on your individual computers, but my 8.1 upgrade took around 40 minutes, compared to about 50 on my Mac, even thought the PC is slower.
I think Windows 8 (8.1) is an excellent OS, which was maybe a bit radical for people at launch, trying to drag them too far out of their comfort zones. 8.1 pulls it back a bit, and allows people to live in the traditional desktop much more. I don't understand mourning the loss of the Start 'menu' BTW - it's usually a mess of stuff, displayed small, that you have to scroll through. Things are much easier to find on the Start 'screen', even if it involves 'jumping' away from the desktop. Give it a chance and decide for yourself instead of jumping on the Vista bandwagon...0 -
I just tweeked my desktop PC so both desktop and Start screen have the same wallpaper. Somehow it makes 8.1 seem more integrated. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

It's the fact that they took away one basic piece of windows functionality (the start button) that grated with most people I know who have used it. This instantly made it more difficult to use. Yes you can get replacements, but they are all add-ons by other companies and a lot of people won't be aware of their existence.0 -
