I like Win 7 at least you can set user passwords, but Win 8 is linked to your Microsoft account so you need to login using your MS login details, but i dont find any other issues using win 8 or 8.1

    Sorry, that is totally incorrect.
I have 3 Windows 8 devices (and support many many more than this), all are using local accounts and not Microsoft ones. It's very very straightforward to do this when you set it up.

I've already decided to go for Windows 8 I have been using it on laptop for months now I don't have anything major against it so no reason not to get it on new PC :)

Persopnally I wouldn't get it on a non-touchscreen device (if the choice was there) as it makes it far more of a pain to use than is necessary.

victor2 - nope, I said button, not menu. And if you don't like being taken to a different screen for the start 'screen' then my suggestion above for using the same background on both interfaces might help make the transition less jarring. You can also change the size of the icons to be much smaller, making it a lot more like a list and more similar to the old menu.
  • Dont be afraid of change. Its always the same when you try something new... give it time and you'll get used to it. I installed 8.1 on the day it was released and think its even faster tho i was expecting the control panel to be fully win8 themed which was a bit of a disappointment. Whats more i am unable to reactivate volume control from my taskbar (the option to activate is greyed out in the control panel?)

For once I mostly agree with a Prowla post about Windows 8!

Namely that it isn't a game changer and your previous opinion of Windows 8 can be safely upgraded to Windows 8.1 without any changes.

And yes the default yellow theme is pretty awful, didn't take long to get my nice purple one back though.

Love to know how you do this

Also cant get my toolbars to work on internet explorer 11 - can you reinstall i.e. 10?

Sure - I like change, but only when it's for the better.

Nothing in Windows 8.x is better than Windows 7 (in fact, it looks like Windows 2!).

In case anyone else got the power management problem after upgrading, I seem to have got it fixed.

For reasons I don't understand the cure turned out to be taking the account out of Homegroup. This is a group 8.1 creates and automatically puts the computer in - can be checked via the folder list in File Explorer.
