Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
In which case it might be worth OP doing a forced upgrade.
The good old hold down the backup button and rebooting from off.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

The engineer talked me through a reboot (where I had to hold the button down until the four lights went off) but it didn't work!

    works ok on scart
    reboots on HDMI?

Something with the HDMI on the telly is causing a short or a spike in the STB? Did you try it with another TV yet?

Sounds similar to a problem a friend's Grandma had a while back. I got a call asking if I could help as she couldn't get Sky, she could get it but only one channel and couldn't change off it.

Has your TV got built in Freeview?
Hers did. When it was showing a picture it was actually through freeview and not sky, they just thought it was Sky. So the Sky box seemed to be doing everything you'd expect just not changing the picture.
Check your AV channels to make sure it is actually picking up the Sky box when trying to view through HDMI.

**disclaimer. I read the first post and then picked through the rest**

Yes it does have Freeview, this is what happened last night. After the SKY engineer talked me through the reboot I thought that SKY was back, then it switched itself off again so I switched to the SCART and the TV worked, however we were watching the football on ITV. Obviously through Freeview as when I switched the TV on this morning there were no SKY channels and the message read there was a problem with my viewing card and to contact SKY, however I switched off at the wall and back on and all worked!?!?

The viewing card error might have something to do with this. Did you mention it to the Sky guy?

Didn't really think to at the time but will when he comes back - can't come 'til Saturday.
I tried all 3 HDMI connections on my main TV and it switched itself off on them all! Tried it on the kids TV and it switched itself off within 10 minutes! Definitely not my TV.
Was fine with the SCART lead all evening and then this morning it switched itself off even with that!!! The plot thickens! Although I think that actually narrows it down to the STB!

Thanks for all who have made suggestions - I will post again when the SKY guy has been on Saturday - just incase it happens to anyone else! Thanks again.

    Good luck!

I think your tv was a red herring. Panasonics of that era (as well as many other brands) did have certain issues with HDMI but I think that was more an issue at that time and not so anymore.

It was a faulty STB!!! It wasn't a new box at all! Apparently, if your STB is over a year old and develops a fault they have to replace it with a re-furbished one and of course the one I had to get had never been repaired properly. The engineer gave me a brand new box and all is working fine!. Thank you all for the hints and tips.
