Facing dismissal because of a mistake

My deputy is an absolute idiot. And even if they don't dismiss me I have to decide if I even want to go back working with him.

Why? Because he reported you? In companies where I have worked, using company funds for personal things was an absolute no-no and was a grounds for instant dismissal, especially if people in management positions did it.

If I had a boss with your attitude, as in "oh, I don't know if I want to work with you because you reported me" attitude, I would be glad I reported you. I can't believe you even dipped your hands into the petty cash for personal reasons, let alone haven't paid it back. How can you expect the company to trust you from now on with their money?
  • I'm glad you've found a way forward Monty-doggy. I'd say don't dwell on the past, embrace your new future. "Life isn't about waiting out the storm, it's about learning to dance in the rain". Best of luck to you :)

Have you even read the whole thread? I didn't 'dip my hands in the petty cash' and my deputy was a bully and manipulative before any of this started. The point about not wanting to work with him relates to his whole behaviour not just this incident, however he further added to this situation for his own gain.
I don't have a bad attitude, I've paid the ultimate price for my MISTAKE and now I'm trying to move forward with my life and I dont need to be pulled further down by nasty comments.

If you even knew a glimps of what brought my life to this point you wouldn't be so judgemental.

Monty-Doggy, I have every sympathy with your situation and it's great that you've found a way forward. But, I do feel that part of dktreesa's point is valid in that you were dismissed because you put yourself in a situation where colleagues and management could reasonably believe you misused company funds. It's clear from the thread that this was a genuine mistake however your post about helping out in another store is another example where your genuine wish to help and be a good employee could be misconstrued. I'm sure that jumping on a till in a store you don't even work at would be a breach of cash management procedures for which you could be dismissed. Imagine if the till came up short at the end of the day. You would be an easy target because you weren't even meant to be there! Clearly you believed you were doing the right thing but policies and procedures are in place to protect employees as well as the company. If I were in your position I would promise myself to always follow procedure to the letter in future to avoid any more potentially disastrous misunderstandings.

I hope your search for a permanent job is successful soon.
  • how petty , your boss must be a right ahole

you have a point, op may be better suited to working for a small company with less strict policies and procedures

The interview went well. But unfortunately I didn't get the job. It was between me and one other, and the feedback was I am what they are looking for, but the other candidate had more confidence and with it being a new store there will be directors and chairmen all over the place and they thought she'd be more suitable, however would I be interested in other positions with them, to which I said yes and I'm on the list for the next vacancy.
I prob did come across as a little nervous as it all moved so quickly and I was feeling like I had to get this job or my world would fall apart...not the case!
I'm still doing my temp job, it pays 66% less than my old job but it's better than nothing. I've just done a 12 hour shift until 2am!

My plans have changed slightly, I don't want to come across as desperate or nervous for a job, although I've been knocked for six by all this!

I'm going to do the temp job up until Xmas, and have some time with my family. Then in jan I'm going to find a similar but smaller role and go to college at night and study so I can move carrer slightly. I've no qualifications other than gcse and I want a complete fresh start.

We've looked into our finances and we can afford a drop in my salary so I can do this.

I'm scared but also excited as this is the start of something new :)

Good for you. Having had some awful experiences work wise myself as I said before, sometimes getting the sack from a job thats making you unwell with stress is the best thing in the long run even though it doesnt feel like it at the time.

Ive worked in places where people have used and then replaced petty cash at the end of the day, thats really not the same as someone dipping their fingers into the till. And it is very clear from what the OP posted that her deputy had an agenda. He wanted her job.

Ive worked in companies where the senior staff I managed wanted my job and started a campaign to get me out and they were successful, its an awful thing to go through. But you get through it.

She made a mistake. One mistake. To the sum of what, ten pounds? Ten pounds that she was always going to replace. I think sacking anyone over that was incredibly harsh.
