ive not had a roast dinner since xmas :( but i did have about 3 of them lol :D

i think i might convince my mum to cook us one soon, she just bungs it all in and it comes out delicious. makes it so much easier than me. :) this is nice once in awhile but i think it be too much effort and money to cook it every week.
  • That's a coincidence, I was only thinking tonight that I fancy a change from roast this Sunday. We usually have one every week and love it but I'm bored with cooking it and feel like trying a new recipe. I'm going to take look through my cookbooks tomorrow and find a new recipe. We'll definitely include butternut squash as I have 2 in the fridge (50p each in MrA) and probably chicken breast 'cos I've got some in the freezer. Maybe accompanied by Dauphinoise potatoes which I adore and haven't had for ages. There, I've almost worked out what we're going to have;).

skiintchick could you teach him to do a roast dinner like i suggested - bung the chicken in and then do a tray of roast veg then make the gravy - i think if i were you it would be either have what i cook or contribute - my oh now makes spag bolognese with and for the kids and also a great risotto

Oh, he knows HOW to do it; I taught him how to cook roasts before we got married, but once we wed and moved in together it became my job. I do have one night a week off, but then we have takeaway because it's his night to cook and he doesn;t want to!

He will eat whatever I do but I know he likes a roast and he is fussy about food because he doesn;t like cream, butter or cheese, so it's hard because he won;t even try lasagne made without cheese as he is convinced he won;t like it.

We also can;t really afford things like steak or chicken breasts, which would be easier I know but when I do a roast I get at least two meals out of it plus stock for soup so it's worth the money.

Oh well, I guess I'm stuck doing roasts!

He is very lucky - I cook from scratch every night and he gets all kinds of yummy food.

Why don't you buy a whole chicken and debone it yourself? Then you could stuff the breats and he gets his chicken fix, you get an easier meal and you have lots of chicken left for extra meat and stock. ;)

I was thinking about this the other day funnily enough! I do a roast every Sunday too & am getting bored. I did lemon roast chicken last Sunday with salad & new pots which was much easier and made a nice change.

I have a mutiny on my hands when I suggest something other than a roast dinner lol. The leftovers usually go to make Mondays tea though so it's not too bad.

I shall read this thread with interest.

Same here, it's the law! I did skip the roast a couple of weeks ago and I had a lovely relaxing sunday, but the family are really disappointed when I don't do one. I don't think they realise all the work that goes into it.

Mind you, the summer's coming and car boot season's starting so I'll be doing a roast a lot less often and they'll have to put up with it! :rotfl:
  • i have no standards, i have the same on sunday as the rest of the week!

however, my mum always does somehting fancy....and her alternative to a whole roast chicken are:

strips of chicken marinated in orange, soy, tarragon and parsley
    salmon baked withbutter and parsley
little parcels of filo pastry filled with salmon and a layer of cream cheese mixed with herbs

sadly i don't think these are so cheap or thrifty as a roast chicken!

I always did roasts whilst the kids were young but when my (then 18yo) ds and I moved to the city we got into the habit of sending for a take-out for Sunday lunch! :o

I rarely cook a roast just for me, not because its boring but because its just too much faff; best of all is being invited to sunday lunch by my dsis! ;)

I love a tray of roasted veggies with yorkshire and lots of gravy! one of my favourite sunday lunches when I was a child was a huge steak pie that my mum would sometimes make instead of a joint.
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

Used to do a roast every week but now very rarely. My Dad lives in holland and i think but am not overly sure that its a tradition to have a substantial soup on sunday, the reasoning being that you're far too busy going to church to slave over a hot stove. Dad loves it when we visit as he cooks a mean roast dinner and gets the chance to pull out all the stops. Anyhow I adopted the soup custom when the girls were younger but in recent years even that has gone bye the bye - what with Daddy Weekends and dd's social butterfly life it wouldn't really be worth it. If I'm home (rare) for a Daddy Weekend i will often cook a roastie on Friday night and have it all weekend. When i'm cooking a birthday tea though it's what the girls always request
I'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 2008

I always (well, at least 45 weeks a year) cook a roast on Sunday for the four of us. My DSs would be very disappointed to get something else.

Last Sunday we had Rib of Beef, Yorkshire pud, Roast pots, Roast Parsnips with Balsamic vinegar and brown sugar, Baked beetroot and steamed purple sprouting, all with my very best 'from scratch' gravy. Roast dinners are simple and not very time sensitive and so are ideally suited to Sundays.

i have to say that 9 times out of 10 we do have a roast this is because we go to the mils on a sunday and she is one of those types that has a certain meal on a certain day hence you go up on a thursday its sausage, chips and beans lol, however on the rare occassion that we dont go up i dont cook a roast as such we have toad in the hole or shephards pie etc. I may cook a roast in the week if we're not going up but the weekends are the only time everyone is together all day so we spend time together rather than slaving in the kitchen cooking and then attending to the mountain of washing up.

Oh and i think you may have my husband lol as he is exactly the same although he has to lump it when i cook on a sunday as im the one who cooks it lol
