Carbs/sugar give quick energy and need replenishing often. Fat gives slow release and when using fat for energy, we have large stores so do not need to eat large quantities of it. If you burn 100 calories running a mile, you'd have to run 35 miles to burn a pound of fat. If a twelve stone man has 20% body fat, that's a lot of miles before running out of fuel.
Fat keeps us from getting hungry longer. When I ate bread, pasta etc I would get hungry at 12:00 and 17:00 and if I didn't eat I would get the shakes. I can now go without a meal or three feeling real discomfort. The mind of the bigot is like the pupil of the eye; the more light you pour upon it, the more it will contract.

I am totally struggling to even eat healthily. I have fibro, cfs and PCOS all of which hinder weight loss efforts and admittedly, I have recently 'given in' to it and have kinda thrown the towel in.
Take earlier, I was soooo tired due to my CFS and I 'needed' something sugary - And I know that was probably the worst thing to do but it was like my body was craving that hit!
I just have no idea where to start!!
Don't bother counting greens, you can eat as much as you want. The more the better. Things like potatoes you would count though. They would form part of your carbs. A big part in fact if you eat them regularly.0 -

Your welcome, so glad they worked for you too :T0 -
In my opinion slimming world is the best 'diet'. It encourages healthy eating, planning and home made meals. I lost my last stone and a half of baby weight on it last year ( when my baby was 3 - whoops!) I borrowed the books, didn't go to classes but if there is no one who can help you can always get them on eBay. Good luck x0

Conventional wisdom also says that we should do a lot of exercise. I found that just makes us more hungry and so we eat more. I do short intense bursts of strength training and walk quite a bit.
I researched on line and chose to give up wheat, rye, barley & oats as I have a Coeliac daughter and see that there are many more people who are gluten intolerant. I lost 62lbs in a little under a year and have basically kept it off since February by sticking to the food regime I have chosen. The mind of the bigot is like the pupil of the eye; the more light you pour upon it, the more it will contract.

Forget any diet. Diets dont work long term and Yo Yo dieting is more dangerous than being a little overweight. What is actually making you gain weight? Its your brain. This is because it sees a reason for you to be heavier. It may be because you diet is not giving you all the nutrients it wants and so its hunting for them by making you eat more. It may be that it is running a protection program where it sees large as safer and a protection against say stress of an abusive employer (just an example) Ultimately its your btrain that makes you hungry, slows up your metabolism, makes you want to comfort eat etc etc. Looking inwards may not be the expected advice but its far cheaper than scams like weight watchers and other diets.I like to give people as many choices as possible to do what I want them to. Some months back in summer, I was asking myself the same question, I've never been huge, well by my own standards, but I noticed that clothes were getting too tight and one day a kid yelled something about me being fat randomly in the street. I didn't take it too seriously but it made me think I've got to sort it out. My weight wasn't an issue - I have always been 'OK' on the BMI charts but I carried too much fat on my body so I was sitting at a size 14.
I don't believe in all the trick diets and the eat-standing-on-one-foot type of philospohies and think it's down to consuming less calories (either by taking in less food or by doing exercise to burn off some calories or by doing both). I thought I stood the best chance of combining the too.
For about 1 month, I used MyFitnessPal to track my calorie intake and cut it too 1200 calories a day for the first couple of weeks. That was HARD. I'd never counted calories and was shocked that my cereal and milk could be about 450 calories. Those first two weeks I checked my weight frequently and I lost about 8 pounds in the fortnight.
So calorie restriction will work but it makes eating not very fun... I then kept it to about 1500 which was a bit more livable with.
I then went and joined the gym - I was wary - in fact I posted questions about joining a while back - but thought it was the right thing to do - I paid the year's fee up front so I was sure I'd make myself go and use the gym and of course it's better value and went and bought myself a whole gym wardrobe which was kind of fun.
I had a couple of sessions with a personal trainer to start me off and quickly got into a routine in which I am still today. I go to the gym 6 days a week and rarely miss a day though I have one week off a month. I sometimes go before work or after, whatever fits best for you really and do either 45mins to an hour depending on when I go. I use various cardio machines, use the weight machines and do lots of mat and equipment related exercises. It's natural to get bored but there are TVs to watch, you can take an ipod and if you vary your gym routine that helps. What I like doing which I hope starts a trend at my gym is I take my kindle along and if I'm on the treadmill, I'll put it on the steep incline on a fast walk, pop the kindle on the ledge of the machine and the time goes by much easier.
I am slightly easier on myself foodwise because I am doing well with the gym I think and eat less well than I should I suppose but I have tried to make one or two permanent changes such as not including a daily cake in my lunch box and such like.
In my first PT session she took my measurements. Three months later, after the hard work and exercising and being a bit better with food and she measured me again and I'd lost inches all around my body. I was so pleased that the effort had paid off.
So basically, that's after about 3 months of frequent exercise and dropping calories a bit each day and I've lost a dress size. There's times when I just really can't be bothered but then I think about what I've achieved and it motivates me to do it.
So that might help you if you're looking for a 'story' that just uses that basic calorie count and in not that long a time. I'm happy to tell you more if you have any Qs, just message me.0
