Windows Updates on Vista OS

The easiest thing to do for now is to run a System Restore to before the problem began.
You can spend days messing around with Fixes when there can be other problems with your machine. Hanging in general is not a good thing.
So sometimes the best and quickest option is for a backup and Factory Restore/Clean Install.0 -
So should I restore back to a few days and then try the updates? Factory restore, you mean strip everything off the laptop and then reinstall? I don't fancy doing that as I know I'll mess it up. I might have to give the laptop to my nephew to sort out or just leave the updates where they are.0

Updates have totally messed up my husband's laptop. It's a Samsung R510 with Vista Home Premium 32 bit O/S.
Been having to do system restore every day since Wednesday but today switched it on and it said configuring updates stage 1 of 3 so left it. Have now had black screen for over an hour. Moving mouse does nothing. The light at the bottom of the laptop that looks like a can was flickering fast but isn't now. Factory restore not an option as it has stuff on that needs backing up, it also has Office 2010 on it and we don't have the money to buy it at the moment.
Problems started Tuesday/Wednesday when laptop started having a box come up in middle of desktop screen headed interactive services. Main body of the box said:
'A program can't display a message on your desktop
The program may need information or permission to complete a task.
Show me the message
Remind me in a few minutes
Show program details.
I clicked on show program details and got the following.
program(s) or device(s) requesting attention
Message title: Extracting Files
Program path
oftwareDistribution\Download\Install\NDP40-KB2858302-v2-x86.exe
Received: 10 october 2013
This problem happens because of partial incompatibility with Windows. Please contact the program or device manufacturer(s) for more information.
The only program which I've tried to update was iTunes and that failed but when I checked on Apple's website it said that latest version is compatible with the O/S on my husband's laptop.
Please could someone give me a solution which doesn't involve factory restore or cost money. Once I can get to accessing the stuff we want to keep, I'll put everything I can onto an external hard drive (could I use mine even though my laptop has Windows 7 as the O/S? Also how do I get the music in Itunes onto the external and back onto the laptop?
What is really annoying us is that I set the settings for updates so that we're told about updates but can choose whether to download and install them but these latest ones have got past that.
I'm hoping to be able to save enough money over the next couple of months to buy my husband a new laptop for Christmas.0 -
Deleted due to double post (was on phone).0

So do the System Restore, back up and then the Factory Restore.0 -
Can't do anything now, just got black screen, might have to try the switch off, switch on and do system restore. Can back up most of the stuff we want to keep but need to know how to solve the problem of the iTunes music, getting that onto external and back onto laptop. Also we need to keep Office which was bought with a 2 computer licence, I installed it on my laptop and my husband's laptop.0

Turn of with by holding Power button. Remove battery. Wait, then replace. Turn machine on.. Start in Safe Mode and run a System Restore if necessary.0

By default, the ITunes folder should be in the standard Windows music folder (\users\<username>\Music for Vista) so if you copy that off you should be able to restore it back to the same location afterwards.
I don't understand what you mean about losing Office, do you still have the install CD and product key or are you missing something?
Were you doing the daily system restores due to the ITunes error?

Something happened which meant that after putting in the password, the desktop wouldn't load, laptop wouldn't open anything once getting to desktop, that's if desktop would load. To get the product key, I could possibly get it from my software for students account (was studying 2 years ago so was able to get it for £40) or from the email they sent with it if I can find it.0
