Windows Updates on Vista OS

Hi. I earlier had an alert saying I had 25 Windows Updates to install. I clicked to install and the first one installing appeared to be a System Pack 1, but after an hour it had only got to 2%. I didn't want to hang about and wanted to log off, so shut down laptop, but should 1 update take so long and why be at 2% about an hour later? Is there a way to see what updates are being installed and see if I need them all?

Service Pack 1?? Is that a joke?

Service Pack 1 was introduced more than five years ago. Did you run a Factory Restore?
Brand and model number of machine?0 -

I'm not hugely computer savvy, but I wondered too about the service pack, think it might have said xp too??
I have an HP laptop. will have to look for model number. Why would I need a factory restore, surely that would strip everything off the machine?0 -
I've just worked out how to view updates, Service Pack isn't there now, but was defo what was trying to install before. Not sure how to get list on here, but a lot are security updates for Vista. IE 9, nET framework 18 essential updates and the others are optional ones for excel, MS Office, which I've never used, so might leave them. Should I just let them install even if it takes forever?0

If you hold the Windows button and press R to bring up the run box then type winver and press enter it should show you exactly what version of Windows you have installed and what service pack. If you are missing a service pack (there are two, an up to date Vista should show service pack 2) then you can download them as standalone versions from the Microsoft site. If you don't have any service pack installed then you'll need to download both service pack 1 and 2 then install them both one after another.
Once you're at service pack 2 (or if you already are) it's just a case of waiting for Windows update to work through downloading and installing updates. As Vista is older it will take a long time and it's not likely to show all the updates initially, it will progressively add more once it's installed certain updates.

Thanks John. I am running version 6, build 6002 and Service Pack 2. Th SP didn't come up again in list of updates to install, but have decided to ty install again and hope it doesn't take forever for just one update.
Its currently still on the first one, a NET framework 4 on xp server - but I am running Vista? Can't make sense of any of it!0 -
That fine. Let it continue. We'll see what happens.
It's not a Vista SP.0 -
It says vista on the end of the xp NET framework one.
Thanks for your help, I will let the updates run, I just wasn't used to one taking an hour. Might have to leave this run all night lol.0 -
The install of an update hangs?
Go into task manager and stop spoolsv.exe
Worked for me, install then continues.0 -
