Bad Drivers

Ohhh, I didn't know the 40mph thing for lorries over 7.5 tonnes
Unfortunately that particular lack of knowledge is quite widespread.but to generalise, my reference was towards cars doing 40mph on bits of road that are perfectly safe to do 60 mph on I.e. nice straight wide bits!
So if it is a nice safe straight piece of road, you stick the right hand indicator on, press the right pedal, and overtake?0 -
            Another one to add:
If you are in a side road and are driving out onto a main road, the drivers on the main road have right of way and you should look both ways. Last week I was driving down a main road and a car came out of a side street (actually, a hardstanding beside some houses, which the house owners drive over to get to the back of the houses, where they park). The driver did not give way. He turned right and crashed into my car, which now has a V shaped dent in the middle of the bonnet. Fortunately there were no serious injuries, although my daughter is still in some pain a week later. I also have an independent witness.
But please, do check both ways at a junction, even if there is no sign telling you to do so.
Regarding speed, I have occasionally driven at 40-50 miles an hour in a 60mph zone, even though road conditions have been good. The reason is that I have been driving to Kwik Fit to have a replacement tyre following a puncture, and my car has a smaller spare tyre, which clearly states a maximum speed of 50mph. I haven't driven more slowly to annoy other drivers, but purely for safety reasons. I know that this isn't the case for many 'slow' drivers though.0 -
One of my pet hates... 40mph on a 60mph A road then 40mph through the 30mph village past the school etc. But its not 40mph when they see a sign saying bend in the road its 23 - 27mph.. arghhh.
Its usually a retired older person with glasses that can only see the road or the speedo but not both.
Learned to drive in the original austin 7 with a top speed of 40mph and never exceeded that speed even on the motorway they accidently went on once in 1967.
Another one.. MAIN BEAM idiots.
If you can see the lights on a car ahead and you have main beam on its annoying. If the car is coming towards you on the otherside of the road its more than annoying.
After spending some time lighting the interior of my car up with your main beam why is it a surprise for me to slow down and let you pass then follow you with mine on?
How about a final moan for policemen? If i am in the 3rd lane of a deserted expressway at about 1am, Dont tailgate them and flash your lights for them to move over if the signs above say i need this lane for the exit. Then go around. Should you have been speeding anyway with no blue lights on?
You flashed me so i flashed my rear fogs for you.
Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Most of the above plus I really hate the idiot drivers who drive down motorway onslips at 30-40 miles an hour and then expect the traffic to adjust to their speed.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

I too get very annoyed at people driving at 40mph in a 60mph zone. I had one driver doing 30mph on the country road, then 15-20mph in a 40 zone through a village. Oh and he braked heavily for every bend in the road, and even worse for every oncoming car that passed him. When I finally got a chance to overtake him he got very annoyed and started flashing his lights at me, even though the road was perfectly clear and straight for hundreds of metres and I was comfortable able to accelerate to double his speed while still being within the speed limit.
Another thing that annoys me, and is downright dangerous:
If you want to pull out in front of me from a junction then make sure your car is capable of accelerating up to my speed before I have to slam on the brakes to avoid crashing into the back of you!0 -
The purpose of indicators is to allow other road users to know what you are going to do and adjust their behaviour accordingly.
I can't count the number of times I see a car approaching as I go to cross a junction and then indicate as I'm on the road (it doesn't seem to occur to them that someone walking in a straight line along a pavement will be crossing a road that crosses said pavement), thus meaning they have to come to a stop and wait.
Despite that fact that I have right of way, if I see a car indicating early enough in those circumstances I'll slow my pace a little so that they don't have to stop - thus saving them from wasting petrol.
It's a shame when people are too stupid to allow you to be considerate. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
Mini roundabouts in supermarket car parks have the same rules as your standard big roundabout - give way from the right, don't make everyone at every exit sit there wondering who is going to go first and then suddenly everyone miraculously remember the rule.
Also, people who don't indicate correctly at roundabouts get a good shouting at from me. If you're going straight over to the second exit - why are you signalling right? If you're taking the second exit on a 4 exit roundabout, why are you in the right hand lane and then cutting up everyone who is in the correct lane? Standard roundabout rules, left lane for 2nd exit unless otherwise stated.0 -
            It's a speed limit, not a target!just passing through.... Nothing to see....0
 -
But it is a speed limit.. limit meaning maximum you can do.. not a compulsory speed or not a speed minimum..
anyone who thinks differently is daft..
on some windy narrow bendy country roads it is 60 but no way would i do 60 because you just cant be safe doing so.. so i will float between 40-50 depending on the road.
to answer the above anyone who thinks 60 is the minimum target on such roads and not a limit should have their license revoked and be shot in the face.
i guess that is my pet hates.. cocky drivers who assume everyone should drive like they do when they themselves are not perfect..0 -

Speaking of roundabouts - there's one near me which is a motorway junction, traffic light controlled at peak hours. The approach from the A-road is 3 lanes, and there are 3 directions you can go, left onto the motorway, straight on on the A-road, or right onto the motorway.hgotsparkle wrote: »Mini roundabouts in supermarket car parks have the same rules as your standard big roundabout - give way from the right, don't make everyone at every exit sit there wondering who is going to go first and then suddenly everyone miraculously remember the rule.

Anyone with an once of common sense will realise that 3 lanes, 3 directions, make it obvious which lane to use. Left for left, middle for straight on, and right for right. Hardly rocket science.
Yet the amount of times I've had to wait for 2 or 3 light changes when I want to turn left onto the motorway, because there's been a 10+ car queue in the left lane, with only maybe 1 or 2 cars in the middle lane, with most of the cars in the left lane being morons going straight on! What kind of numpty joins a long queue in the left lane when they want to go straight on?0
