I don't think the OP has had her remotes stolen, that's another poster.

We've had a packing service a couple of times with GB Liners and they were brilliant.

Things always seem to go missing when you move. Lots of them turn up in unexpected places months or years after moving. My first thought would be that something is mislaid or left behind rather than thinking it is a removal man.
  • If I stated what had been stolen, then the appeal to removal men would be obvious. It certainly was to a poster I PM'ed when I told them.

As a friend of mine said "You're pretty meticulous...you would definitely know" and I have been through everything again and again with a fine toothcomb looking for these things. I would very much prefer to think the items had just been mislaid...but when you have gone through literally every single possession you own...then you know it aint down to you unfortunately.:(

I don't like thinking this has happened to me or that I was naïve enough to allow myself to get engaged in conversation (ie distraction techniques) by one of them whilst packing. No-one in their 60s wants to think they might still be naïve at times:(

You seem absolutely convinced they have taken it, so raise it with them directly or go to the police as advised earlier. If you are not prepared to do either of these things then you need to just forget it.

The move from my childhood home to my late teenage home (if that makes sense), I lost a box of McDonalds Happy Meal toys spanning 10 years and a signed Jim Henson cell. Was told, basically, to suck it up. I have half a feeling they went to the tip without family wanting to tell me, but I'd been saving them to sell to put me through uni etc.

The move from my teenage home to my "first solo" home, I lost all my !!!!!! (but that must've been either my dad or my stepmum because they were the ones who helped me move.

The move from one rental property to another, the box with all my and flatmates' important paperwork (passports, driving licences, V5s etc) went missing. Reported it to the removal company who did very little but went out of business not long after. Was total pain in bum reporting.

My recent moves (since I've owned a car), I take anything precious (whether monetarily or sentimental) or important to have handy in my car and leave the "routine" stuff for the removal men.
We may not have it all together, but together we have it all

10 years ago when my father moved a rather nondescript headboard for a single bed went missing. Despite getting Interpol involved, it was never found.

    Interpol? For a headboard??

    I am 101% convinced unfortunately.

The items concerned were on the right-hand side of the 2nd shelf up in the top cupboard in my dining room. That's how well I knew where all my possessions were after I had finished pre-move decluttering. I knew exactly what else was on that shelf (ie items that wouldn't appeal to removal men) and all those items turned up okay, as did everything else in the cupboard and everything else in the house.

    Yes I AM that meticulous.

I am awaiting response from the removal firm to my request to deal with this and I have told my estate agents what happened and the name of the firm concerned (ie because they doubtless have customers asking them to recommend a removal firm and I wouldn't wish this to happen to anyone else).

One way or another those men will regret this...

I have never had this happen, and what's more, anything valuable or irreplaceable would be taken by us in the car. Just general household stuff would go with the removal men. I find it highly unlikely that removal men would steal stuff. Least of all remote controls!! Are you sure you haven't just mislaid it?

Many years ago, (1990s,) I remember this guy who had a decorating firm doing our house while we were on hols, and when we came back, an expensive collectible seemed to be 'missing' from our bedroom. We searched everywhere, and I really wanted to go to the owner and say I think one of his workmen has taken it. I didn't right away...

When I was hoovering (about 2 weeks after) I moved our double bed and found it had dropped between the divan drawers and was really hidden away!

So they hadn't taken it at all.

I felt awful. And really glad I had not said anything.

Yes, in addition to my earlier post, we also take the precaution of moving our most valuable/irreplaceable items by car. Last time we actually took them (carefully wrapped ;)) weeks in advance of our impending move to my parents' house where we stored them in a spare room. As we were making several journeys (150 miles each way) to visit them in the run up to our move we took several car loads :D This wasn't TVs or electronic stuff such as computers as we needed to keep the computers with us for business reasons and we're not TV people so only have a tiny one, lol!

Years ago my parents had a similar situation regarding a gas fitter that they came close to accusing of stealing a collectable Waterford crystal item. I managed to talk them out if it as I was convinced they'd *hidden* it in a safe place. It turned up last year when we were clearing their house. I was sooooo glad they never accused the poor guy as he may have lost his job as a result :o

Ooooo, my mind's boggling now money - wondering what might be so appealing to removal men..........!!!!!! mags? No, you don't strike me as the type, lol :rotfl:

Joking aside, it does sound as though you're totally convinced they took whatever it was and that you really did know the exact location of each and every possession at least before you moved. I still hope it turns up somewhere you've omitted to look, but it seems as though you have checked everywhere........

We had the opposite issue with one (national) company we employed to move us a few years back - they found something (IIRC it was a cheap, but new looking lady's belt) in the back of the van that they wrongly assumed to be mine. When I disabused them if this fact they told me to keep it.......so just goes to show a) things can fall out of boxes and get left behind in removal lorries and b) they weren't bothered about locating the actual owner - but as I said, it was only a cheap and rather unappealing item :o
