Should I come to move again (ie that would be when you hear the whoops from where you're sitting because I've just won a sizeable amount then....) then the two things that strike me from my experiences on this are:
- aim to choose a small local firm (but in BARS just in case......) and don't have a nationally-known one
- DONT HAVE THEM DOING THE PACKING FOR ME. I thought I was making life easy for myself lobbing £300 odd extra in their direction to have them doing my packing for me. I wouldn't do that again. I'd do my packing myself. That way, I would have exact lists of what had gone into each box (where they had jumbled all sorts up together) and, more to the point, all boxes would be sealed-up (very firmly and with nice thick tape). That way they wouldn't be able to tell whether something they thought worth stealing was in box 3 or box 17 iyswim. All boxes would be numbered and I would count the numbers on boxes and tick them off as they re-emerged the other end, to be sure no boxes were missing.
In fact, I'd probably be out looking for some sort of candlewax seal I could apply to the tape on each box and it would be instantly visible if the seals had been broken.0 -

You will find another clue about whats what in the (very careful) wording of my last post. Study every word and think about it......well I didn't want to "name the firm"....I picked my words carefully....
I must be thick as I just can't work out what went missing! Can I have a clue please?Every Penny's a Prisoner.

but of course you'd have to pack the boxes yourself.
A family friend did this. Got a small note pad and wrote the number on the box and on the note pad she wrote 'box 35 - books' 'box 36 -stationary'

I helped out on moving day
I started out doing this on our recent move, but got bogged down with there being soooo many boxes (130-150 iirrc ) and the fact that they were only delivered the day before *day 1* of our move, which was spread over five days......three to load up and two to unload at the other end 150 miles away. My good intentions soon turned to panic and even with DH on hand to assist - first time he's not been busy working at moving time - they went out the window.
It's definitely a good idea though!
I managed to catch up a little after the first day as there was a gap of a couple of days before they came back for the next load - first lot went into storage till moving day the following week as our move was so close to Christmas we had to fit in with their other bookingsMortgage-free for fourteen years!
