You spend what you want Becca! :) We're the same, our baby has had a fortune spent on him and you know what, I don't care! :p We're lucky that the in-laws bought the pram (which we found at the best price we could) and my parents bought the furniture (bought on a special offer) which has freed us up to buy the nice things and go a bit crazy. :) Everyone's circumstances and wants are different... we've gone for the silly baby furniture because it's adorable and we both look at it and think that's the kind of stuff we'd have loved as children. We know that it's more practical to buy proper furniture, but it's what we wanted and it's M&P and really well built, will last a lot longer than our current Ikea wardrobes! :)

I've also had friends tell me off for buying things like his bouncy chair and play gym etc but we wanted the ones that we picked carefully, not what someone else has decided to buy that might not be the best choice. :o Same with clothes, I want to make sure that there's a good amount of well-made, comfortable outfits for his first months rather than rely on presents when in all likelihood our friends (most of whom haven't got children) will buy things that look cute but aren't practical so I don't want to rely on gifts to clothe my baby. :o

I've learnt a good word to use whenever people make a negative comment about how organised we are or how OTT they think we may have gone... 'So?' :p

They'd better watch what they're saying anyway or we won't be forthcoming with hand-me-downs when they get round to having babies! :rotfl:

  • At the end of the day Becca, you can do what you flippin well want for your baby! I'm at the opposite end if the scale but still getting opinions! We have always been bargain hunters and don't plan on spending much, most of our stuff (except certain essentials) will be bought 2nd hand on eBay as is most stuff in our home!! We get quite a lot of raised eyebrows of people when we tell them like we should be spending thousands of pounds on this baby! Shall we swap friends for a bit?!!

    Morning all,

Thanks for tips re-cars! We think we've whittled it down.
Work give me a set allowance, and then I have to go through the lease company we use to see what I can "afford". I think we're going to go have a look at the ford c-max and mondeo estate at the weekend. Its got to last me for a 3 year lease (if I stay working for that long! :p) so need to make the right decision. If we get something big it means OH can replace his unsuitable 2 seater with something smaller!

Becca Sounds like you got a good deal, and anyway its no ones business what you're spending!!

We're trying to do a mix of hand me downs, ebay bargains and new. The moses basket we got off ebay, the cot is new but from a discount furniture place. The pram I think we're going to buy new, but I guess it depends which we like and how much it is new. I just worry Ill spend a lot of money and then when I actually use it not like it!
I've not paid full price for anything I've bought new, yet!

con we've already got a pine wardrobe we might use (full size) and just need to get a chest to match. But even if we buy something different it wont be a tiny child's wardrobe, as cute as they are I think we'll get better use of a full size.

  • Hi Girls,

Just back from our 16 wk check and everything went really well. Heard the HB straight away and even gave a kick :D

Feeling a little more relaxed now and can enjoy the Half Term break a little more.

As for spending money on the baby, I think people are entitled to spend as little/much as they want/can afford, it shouldn't matter to anyone else! We are lucky that my parents are buying the pram, and we have saved for a while so can get some bits. But must admit a lot of the older generation have commented on how much the pram we like is.

It's our baby and we will buy what we want too :) *Sing to the tune 'It's my party...'*

Love you ladies! I think the thing that's annoyed me is that the pram is our splurge. Everything else we've been bargain hunting/eBay for!

Birdie I love the baby furniture! Which one did you go for? We like Hayworth but need to look elsewhere really.

We've got Fern in white. :) It's gorgeous and so sturdy. We liked the Hayworth too but it is so expensive, we don't feel like we've settled at all though, especially seeing how much space we don't have in the room now everything's in there, the Hayworth stuff would have taken up more space than we can afford. Nursery is the nicest room in the flat now by a mile, we were both comtemplating moving in because we're jealous that the baby's room is so much nicer than ours! :rotfl:

  • Hope your scan goes well squirrel. It's lovely to see them at that stage and find out what you're having. Good luck with your appt con1888. Faith2009 - it's lovely when you first hear the heartbeat and start feeling those kicks :D

Can't believe family/ friends are commenting on some if your purchases when it's none of their business! I'm really lucky in that my sis spoils my kids. For DD2 she bought a gorgeous cashmere blanket personalised with her name on http://www.studioroam.co.uk/store/baby-blankets/

I haven't bought much yet for this little one. I have a few neutral newborn size clothes as we were team yellow last time. I'll need to sort out all the boxes of clothes and I suppose sell all the little girlie things :(
