Don't forget that under The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 your employer has to pay for regular eye tests if you use computers for any significant part of your work (I think it's 15 hours or more a week). If these tests find that you need glasses, your employer also has an obligation to contribute to the cost of these.

Some employers simply reimburse the expense, so use the voucher instead, it could be less hassle.

Just to clarify - the law does state that after you have requested an eye test the employer has a duty to ensure regular tests after that.

"(3) At regular intervals after an employee has been provided with an eye and eyesight test in accordance with paragraphs (1) and (2), his employer shall, subject to paragraph (6), ensure that he is provided with a further eye and eyesight test of an appropriate nature, any such test to be carried out by a competent person" -

I was told by a Union person that the employer had to contribute to the glasses, but looking at the letter of the law this does not seem to be the case. Thankfully my company did anyway!

If glasses are required SOLELY for VDU work, then the employer must pay for them.
If you require glasses for general use but also happen to wear them for VDU work, the employer does not not have to pay but some may still do so or may contribute.

Am hoping someone reading might know the answer to this question:

why are the free eye test deals always for glasses, and never for contact lens checks?
  • Remember, if you live in Scotland, eye tests are free for everyone at all opticians.
  • I tried using this voucher in the store in Hull and it was only free if you bought glassses there on the same visit. They only told me this after I'd had the eye test. They hovered over me and I felt pressurised so I did not get any glasses and had to pay the £15 fee. Surely the voucher is not telling the whole truth here....

    Cheers

In which case, return with another copy of the voucher, and your receipt, and insist on a refund.

If they do not refund you, take the name of the person you speak to and then write to their head office, making copies of the voucher and receipt to enclose, and demand a refund.

There are no terms which state that you must buy glasses so they have pulled a fast one on you.

Some people might complain in store in a rather loud manner - I couldn't possibly comment.
  • hi all - would just like to ask a question:- I usually have my eyes checked etc at D&A (they have my details etc) - if i was to go for the free eye test at optical express would i need to 'register' all my details with them?? would they know that i am 'registered' with D&A?? - can i 'register' with more than one optician??

    thanks for any helpX

The voucher says nothing about any terms and conditions applying or that it's only in selected stores so I don't see how they can do that if you've given them the voucher and then been tested before they've told you. I might test them on that as I'm due to be in Hull before the end of the offer. I'd love to know what they'd do to someone that flatly refused to pay.

As far as I know I don't even need glasses, but I thought a large part of the reason for offering them free is because of people that should have glasses thinking they don't need them and not wanting to pay to be told something they already 'know'.

I suppose the reason is that if a new patient is already a contact lens wearer, then in all likelyhood, they would be getting their contact lenses elsewhere and there is little chance of them making a sale to cover their costs.

Eye exams, however often result in a dispensing of spectacles and are therefore (they would argue) worth offering for free.

Personally, I think if they offered a good service and charged fairly for the eye exam and any specs or contact lenses, they wouldn't need to offer free tests.
