I just need to vent! Friends who won't save

We bought our house earlier this year. So suddenly all of our friends are telling us how lucky we are!
There is no luck to it!
None of our friends earn as little as we do but they always winge about not having any money. This again is always followed by a "you're so lucky to own your own home". One of the worst culprits earns more than my OH and I combined and her husband earns more than that again.
We haven't been on a holiday abroad for 6 years. I haven't been to a hair salon for a decade. We only go out using vouchers. We only shop in charity shops. Yet we're soooooo lucky!!!
Quite frankly I'm starting to get pretty P***ed off.
Sorry for that, it's been weighing on my mind for a little while.

You've had to make sacrifices that other folk are not willing to do, I know people that complain they have no money and yet they get plastered every weekend. What a waste.0

Well done for getting on the property ladder. You sound very sensible
I guess their priorities are just different to yours.
Since joining this site we are in a much better position than we could ever hope to have been had I not joined.

I know the feeling! I have friends who claim to be saving a deposit yet go out a couple of times a week drinking or cinema, then off to gigs or festivals every other weekend. Then moan they can't afford to save enough! Drives me round the bend. It took me ten hard years to save my deposit and now I'm scrimping and saving trying to pay down the mortgage in anticipation of a pay cut next year0

If your friends say "You're so lucky to own your own home" again, why not tell them about your moneysaving journey?
"We don't have as much income as some of our friends but we've made sacrifices and saved hard. We haven't had a holiday abroad for 6 years and I haven't had my hair done in a salon for 10 years"
"If you're willing to make sacrifices and save hard, I'm happy to help you make the moneysaving journey to afford to buy a home. If we can do it (get on the property ladder), you could do it too".
You'll feel better that you've told your friends about your moneysaving journey. No luck was involved, just hard work, sacrifices and perseverance.

It obviously depends on your earnings but you don't always need to give up everything you enjoy just to save.0 -
Over the years I get sick sometimes of having to justify to some people mostly family why I have a nice house/ car etc. I dont have a large income granted not a large mortgage now. But I am careful with money I used to work 60+ hours years ago. I dont socialise and dont go to pub or meals either I prefer it that way. My partner does go out but also careful. I dont have expensive holidays every couple of year snow we go on hols in UK
I been poor when I was a kid through selfish Father spending money on drink etc it made me who I am today careful and I virtually T total occasional Crabbies ginger ale at home
Your not alone enjoy your income and spend it as you see fit0 -

:rotfl: This reminds me of years ago when a friend was complaining that she didn't have enough money to even feed her 2 yr old daughter with the home cooked meals she deserved.
Then she promptly rang for a taxi to take her to McDonalds :eek::eek:
:T Well done OP for buying your house. Enjoy your well earned reward :T“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”0 -

I had a similar experience but I'm ashamed to say that it was a family member. I visited her and her 3 year old son and the boy had head lice. When I asked her if she'd treated him or not she said she couldn't afford the head lice lotion. Then in the next breath she showed me the manicure she'd had the day before "and it only cost £50" she said. She wondered why I stood there with my mouth open!
Some people only exist as examples of what to avoid....0 -
I go a bit too far myself but I get annoyed when people say they need a holiday or they deserve a holiday. Especially people who are in debt and go on and get payday loans. Arghh the list can go on and on. To the op well done and I like your style and agree with your vent.0

My GF has friends exactly like that;
We bought our house aged 20 and 22 (last year) and instead of being congratulated by them we were promptly told how lucky we were to be able to save the deposit.
It didn't occur to them that their combined income was higher than ours and that we sacrificed things to be able to save.
People like that can't see the relation between going out 3 or 4 times a week, getting all the latest games/DVD's/systems and not having a deposit. Some people are just devoid of any financial logic; or logic in general.0
