The late Norman Wisdom, the comedian, had a very hard start in life. After he found success people used to say how lucky he was.
He used to say: "Yes it's funny, the harder I work the luckier I get"

......and absolutely stupid stuff like buying random crap that you'll use once (like an egg slicer - !!!!!!?)

Oi! I have an egg slicer. I love it, it cuts my eggs neatly for salads. :p:D

I drive an 18 year old car, I live in a smallish flat, I shop at Lidl and Aldi, I meal plan and cook from scratch, I shop around for the things I have to have and think hard about the things I want. I'll be mortgage free in less than ten years (hopefully six, if I carry on overpaying), and on the occasions that I splurge on something I hear 'Oh, aren't you lucky to be in that position. You can buy anything you want.'

I work hard, save money, over pay my mortgage and spent years paying off my other debts. Yes, pure luck. Nothing to do with planning and saving at all.

I do not have an egg slicer. I do have a Darth Vader cake tin, if that is frivolous enough....
Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

:( Damn - I want one of those now.....
“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”
  • I want a Darth Vader cake tin too. I like to bake so it would be both fun and practical (justifiable.)

I already have an egg slicer which works pretty well for slicing mozzarella too! Suddenly I feel like a spendthrift!

Thanks for you comments, everyone. I feel a lot better now.

Well done for getting on the property ladder. You sound very sensible
I guess their priorities are just different to yours.
Since joining this site we are in a much better position than we could ever hope to have been had I not joined.
Continued good luck on your journey. :)

I totally agree with you on this!
This site was a godsend for us when we were in the process of buying our house last year.

The trouble is with a lot of ppl these days is, that they want this that and the other, but their main priorities seem to go outa the window.
It right annoys me when ppl I know say they are skint & can't even afford a pint of milk, yet they smoke, drink, have latest top of the range mobiles, Sky, internet etc!!!!!

Moneysaving is easy if you put your mind to it. It's common sense at the end of the day.
Although most ppl seem to lack that at times............

  • I think the problem is that too many people have to continually redecorate and buy consumer goods. tbh it's like a self imposed slavery.
