  • they didnt text me until i returned to the UK.
they told me the data rate and then sent me a string of texts of my usage, the daily usage texts. whats the point in sending them all at once when i am back in the UK.
    its a joke.

Everyone is missing the point! Orange did not notify me of my usage while i was in spain... they did not give me a chance to correct the apps on my phone. had they text me my daily usage at the time of use i would not have this problem.

strange that they didnt text you out there....my phone operated as normal..

    Eh?

They only have 2 daily data packages: £1 for 20MB and £3 for 100MB

    ....or are you on PAYG?

    nope pay monthly.

£1.99 for iirc 15mb...it may have been more...it was a while ago now

was it only the orange texts that didn't arrive, were you sending and receiving texts and calls whilst away?

Really, orange are likely to be in the clear, even on your phone when you switch on data roaming they often tell you that you can incur large bills by activating the feature, I doubt anyone would want orange to monitor the apps on their phone - you are responsible for the data hungry apps on your phone not them
    Yes Your Dukeiness :D
  • i got all my normal texts while away, just not my texts from orange

It's not up to Orange to notify you of your usage, other than their statutory obligation which you admit they fulfilled. If you're not grown up enough to monitor your own usage, then you should be on pay-as-you-go, not a contract.

Imagine going into an expensive bar with a group of friends, putting your credit card behind the bar and letting your friends drink on your bar bill. The barman tells you when your bill has reached £51, but you tell him to carry on serving your friends. While you're not looking, your friends then drink £2000 worth of vintage Champagne in a short space of time. You've just done exactly the same thing with your Orange bill, except that "your friends" are the background apps consuming data.

so why did Orange not keep me informed of my usage.
not until i was back in the UK...... why did i get all my usage texts in the space of 30secs once i was back in the UK.
if i had been informed of the usage then i could have done something about it.

But you must have realised that unless you switched off data roaming, then data would continue to be used? Orange are not responsible for how you use your handset, so if you used the data (have you checked?) and the billing is correct, then you have to pay it.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • i have requested a recalculation of the bill.
i was only there 7 days and the mobile phone company that i was piggy backing is saying i used 5gb of data.
my phone doesnt say i used 5gb and i cant see how my phone being alone in the hotel room, only looking for facebook updates would have used 5gb in 6 days, actually 5 days because my phone was not even switch on the whole time.
i did not have to monitor my data because i was not using the phone.

if i had been on the phone all day every day i can understand how i would have used 1 gb a day but i was not using it.
  • To me, this does look like an Orange billing error with that volume of data. This board has other threads where people have had similar large but wrong data volumes billed.
    Good luck!

except that the OP left his data roaming on, so his smartphone apps were updating etc for at least 5 days while abroad.
My OH had his data roaming switched on for less than half an hour abroad last month, with no calls/texts etc made, and he had data charges applied through the phone apps updating (nowhere near £2000 thankfully, but thats because he realised the data roaming had been switched on, so he quickly switched it off again).

hopefully now you realise that if you are abroad you do need to monitor your data ie switch it off, otherwise you're facing a hefty bill in the future as well.
