Orange bill is over £2000 for one month because of roaming... Help please!!

Orange have sent me a bill for over £2000!
i had my notications switch on during my holiday to spain.
i received a text to say you have a £51 cap on your account to remove reply to the text. so i replied as £51 is a managable amout.
i received a call from orange on friday, 4 weeks after i returned from my week away.
they told me my bill is due and the cost.
this is going to cost me over £2000 to pay, more than i paid for my holiday for 3 people and more than i earn in a month.

how can orange get away with this.... i have been a customer with them for over 7 years and my bill has never been anymore than £75.
now they are hitting me with a massive charge.
is there anything i can do??? do i have a leg to stand on.
i cant afford to pay the bill.

    You were notified that you hit your data roaming limit of £51, you then opted out of the cap by replying. You then carried on using the internet.

    Orange would have text you at regular intervals advising you of usage.

    I don't see what the issue is here?
    I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂
  • I think the safest option is to prize the phone out of your hand for the duration of your holiday and leave it at home!

  • They sent a text saying you have a cap of £51 and "to remove, reply to the text". You replied to the text therefore removing that cap.

    The best thing to do when abroad is leave your phone at home and enjoy a break from life in the UK. Give people (and the bank) the hotel phone number and address just in case.

    OR

    Take your sim card out of your phone. No sim means no chance of roaming charges.

    OR

    Just set the roaming to be OFF. I have this even in the UK.

    Why did you use an Orange UK SIM card in Spain? Why didn't you use an Orange Spain SIM card? Of course you're going to pay roaming charges. Orange UK charges £459 per gigabyte in Spain as opposed to around £10 per gigabyte in the UK.

    Your best bet is to ask Orange UK to apply a data roaming bundle retrospectively. For example, it has a 0.5GB bundle costing £150 or £3 for 100MB each day.

    its because the APP on my phone was constantly checking for updates.
    i did not receive any texts from orange until i landed back in the uk, then i received all my usage texts at once so i wasnt aware the phone was even using the data until i got back to the UK.

    i removed the cap at £51 because i had to send an email, i was happy to pay an extra £70-£90 on top of my normal bill.
    Not £1900 extra.

    i had to have my phone on and with me because i needed to be contactable in emergencies.

    Sorry I am a bit confused. If you didn't get any texts while you were away does that mean you replied to the cap text when you got back home?

    I got the usage texts when i got back to the UK!
    i didnt know my phone was even using any data.
    i removed the cap so i could finish what i was doing and didnt go online with it again. i used the phone for about 1 min after i removed the cap.

    i had no text from orange telling me my usage or stating that my bill was very high, 26 times my normal monthly usage.
    not until 4 weeks after i returned.

    the only text i got was the cap text.
    when i landed back in the uk i received 6 texts from orange stating my usage progress, texts i should have got at the time of usage so i wasnt aware that my phone was even collecting data

    The apps on your phone that were using data were your responsibility to control, not Oranges.

    You agreed to remove the data cap Orange had in place. You really don't have a case here.

    As mentioned you can try and get them to retrospectively apply a data roaming bundle, or you can pray for some good will, but that's your lot.
