Very rude Telephone cold calling!

3 days running now I have had marketing calls from some loan company or another. Each time I tell them to (politely) get lost.

What has angered me most is when I answer the phone they ask for me by my first name. This falsely leads me to believe that this is someone I know and it clearly isn't. I find this extremely rude. Any professional company should refer to me by my title and last name at least until a relationship has been formed.

Today I just got pushed over the edge so I told the woman that I wish them to stop calling me as I have no need for a loan. I also went on to tell her that as I don't know her I don't wish to be called by my first name. Her reply "Well I don't know you so stop applying for a loan" and she hung up on me.

I wouldn't apply for a loan in the first place as I wouldn't be accepted anyway.
I am so angry. If they hadn't with-held the number I would call back and complain.

I am registered with the TPS but this still keeps happening.

The people and these companies are beyond belief, they intrude upon your personal time then have the cheek to get the hump if you don't play along with their conversation.
I answer the phone all day long at work and a large volumne of my calls are from muppets like this so for this reason I don't have a landline but rely on my mobile when at home.
A classic one last week which really tickled me was a woman asking to speak to "the person who deals with the telephone account" and I told her we were very happy with our current provider etc etc. She then said "so you work for this company do you" in a sarcastic voice, at which point I started laughing and said well I would hope so, seeing as I am answering the phone! She hung up at this point but I was laughing for ages.

Don't let these people get to you jembie, laugh at them they are sad!

I had a call at five to nine last night asking if I was willing to "answer a few questions about making a will" . I politely told them I was TPS registered and they were breaking the law. I was told my name would be taken off their list. I shouldn't have been there in the first place !
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?

I just tell cold callers that I'm registered with TPS and their company can be fined £1000. It seems to get rid pretty quickly.

I agree with libra10. We are registered with TPS and I just politely say, sorry you shouldn't be calling, we are registered with the Telephone Preference Service. Sometimes the phone is put down immediately, sometimes an apology - our list must be out of date. Did you know you can register for E-mail Preference Service and Post Preference Service too? We did the e-mail one and don't get any spam (but we do have all sorts of filters on). Didn't do the mail one as we wouldn't get things like the Council Newsletter or recycling dates as they are delivered by RM. We just recycle as much junk mail as we can (and to be honest it isn't too much these days).

I had the funniest argument with a cold caller the other night. When I picked up the phone he just started talking to me about mobile phones. So I asked him if he was calling for me personally, as I thought it might have been my provider. He said yes and carried on talking. As it went on I realised he was seling me something, so I said 'you're not calling for me personally, are you, this is a cold call?' and he said 'yes, I am calling for you'. So I asked him what my name was, and he said 'it doesn't matter what your name is' in a real big huff! I couldn't believe he was such an idiot! Put the phone down on him laughing my head off.

Also, at work, we say 'is this a sales call?' and they say, 'no, its a marketing call'. That always makes me laugh, as if we don't all know that they are one and the same. I think they expect us to say, 'oh, ok, well if its a marketing call then please do go on'.

That's no excuse, and is used to justify all kinds of evil.

I always say very politely, thank you for calling but I am putting down the phone now, and put it down. Don't seem to have many problems, though.

Since joining with TPS (which is free if anyone didn't know that), I've only had a couple of UK cold calls in several months and one US-based one. Quite impressed really as I thought it wouldn't have too much of an effect but it's been much better.

We had calls from Capital One Finance for 5 days in a row. On the last call I had from them, they really started the sales patter. At this point I told them that I had had enough and wasn't interested. However this did not stop their sales talk. It was only when they had really wound me up and I told them to f off that the calls stopped. I wish it didn't have to come to that but some people will not take a simple "no, I'm not interested" for an answer. It turned out that they were trying to sell a product to the person who had our number 2 years ago, and who worryingly was still a customer with them!!!!!! (Data Protection - acuracy of information held etc)

Oh, and btw we are registered with the TPS so a complaint was made.

Just say "sorry - which company were you from again?", make a note, then tell them they will be reported to the TPS, and report them. They soon hang up and don't bother calling again because they know they can be fined.

I used to do some cold-calling as part of my job. I hated it. I made sure I was polite, but it was part of my job, and I had to do it. I never called anyone that was flagged up as TPS, and as soon as anyone said "I'm not interested", I'd thank them for their time and leave it at that. It wasn't really hard sell, so I was able just to leave it at that...for some peoples jobs they have to be seen to be on the phone for a certain length of time. Nevertheless, there is no reason for canvassers to be rude - that really it not on at all. One of our friends got a call from a window company. They were really pushy and just wouldn't leave hime alone, so one one phonecall, he ended up playing along with them. He took up a lot of their time, said he wanted a conservatory built. Went through loads of stuff on the phone with them and then invited them round for them to measure up and quote. He lives on a 2nd floor flat! They didn't call back after that!!
