I agree, LIR, nobody knows until the time comes but, if I reached the point where I actually needed a care home (as opposed to sheltered housing) I think I'd hate it and, for all that I joked about it, I still wouldn't rule out Dignitas.

Grim as many care homes doubtlessly are, I think you need a bit more justification than "I need to live in a care home" for Dignitas to accept your case that life is no longer worth living. I hope so anyway.

One of the arguments against assisted suicide is that allowing it would be the thin end of the wedge which could progress to whims of suicide and reasons of economy.

OP, you are not paying extra tax. You have been undercharged because your code had been applied twice. All that is happening is, you are now back paying the IR, the amount that should have been deducted from you in the first instance.
yes I am aware, the explanation I gave was for the benefit of post who could not understand why I was paying so much tax and was getting annoyed because I would take advice to challenge it,tax man makes many mistakes but always wins, sods law

Chemotherapy is provided to cancer patients. Does that mean I'm entitled to some? I'd hate to miss out on anything that someone else is getting for free........
It's given to some cancer patients, not all are robust enough to cope with it. So you wouldn't be missing out on something you were entitled to, you may not be entitled to it for sound medical reasons.

Dear God, would you give it a rest. I'm trying to present the acceptable face of the generation that had the rug pulled out from under it's feet here :rotfl:

And while you're about it, as the only person who offered you some constructive advice on this thread a 'thanks' (or even an acknowledgement) would be nice.

thought I had remember clicking on the 'thanks tick' it was one of the few useful comments, not use to all the symbols and buttons to tick first time used this site, will be the last

It was nothing to do with whether it's 'grim' or I didn't like the wallpaper there. I would hope that, if I were so incapacitated that the level of care I needed was over and above what could be provided in sheltered housing then I would be a suitable candidate.

Just needing care isn't enough -

Prerequisites for the preparation of an accompanied suicide

In order to access the service of an accompanied suicide, someone has to:
be a member of DIGNITAS, and
    be of sound judgement, and
possess a minimum level of physical mobility (sufficient to self-administer the drug).

Because the co-operation of a Swiss medical doctor (physician) is absolutely vital in obtaining the required drug, further prerequisites mean that the person must have:
a disease which will lead to death (terminal illness), and/or
    an unendurable incapacitating disability, and/or
    unbearable and uncontrollable pain.

Just because you need care in a care home does not mean you would be eligible for Dignitas!
