It used to be a magical day. Now I hate the rigidity and take no pleasure in it. Which I then resent in itself!!
Why not change it then? Have Christmas with just yourselves. As longs as you tell people your plans now they can get used to the idea and you can do what you want. Maybe see one set on Christmas Eve and one set on Boxing Day but keep the actual day for yourself. Sorted.
It can be done you just have to open your mouth and say the word No....it can fake practice but you will get there.0 -
Christmas is one of those things, that depends very much on the person and their circumstances. I think having children is a big part of whether you enjoy/hate Christmas.
If I had kids and loads of money, I'd looked forward to it very much, because, seeing the kids faces light up, when opening presents, is something magical.
If I had kids, but no money, then I'd find it a frightening time, where I would be worried, how I'm going to afford it all.
My situation, I have no kids and a small family and no money worries. However, we don't do presents/cards, so I have no real expense anyway.
I enjoy the time of year, because it something that lights up the winter months. Seeing the shops/streets lit up, but we don't put up a tree or decorations and on the day itself, I do nothing really special.
I can understand, Christmas, can be a stressful time for some, but I see no reason for people to p*ss on people parade, just because someones loves the season and everything that it brings.0 -
I like the build up to Christmas, and it does help me keep my mind off the gloom and dreariness of the dark winter days, but I hate that feeling of utter flatness on Boxing Day a day which always seems so anticlimactic after all the excitement.0

I always feel sad at Christmas because I have no family to buy presents for. No parents or children only him indoors and the cat (had 2 cats until a week ago). I would love to go out for lunch on Christmas Day but most of the restaurants charge extortionate prices. Nice piece of roast beef on the day, not a turkey in sight, lots of lovely repeats on the telly.0

I'm the complete opposite. All of my friends hate Christmas and are of the 'bah humbug' brigade but what I haven't admitted to them is that secretly I quite like it. I spend the day on my own, eating lots and invariably fall asleep in front of the TV - bliss.0

I think we do it because it's the expected thing. We live close to both sets of parents and we don't have children. I think a lot of the resentment is because Christmas has not been the same since my nans passed away.
I would very much like to shut the curtains and say no, but I couldn't deal with the fallout. Guess I've made my own bed, huh?*** Thank you for your consideration ***0 -
families eh! large gatherings and every one has to toe the line, offer to help and be polite. I have done more than my share and watched some get drunk.
This year we know - home is best! The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0 -
xmas is cheap for me nowadays but i still buy the things i want, just source them as cheap as possible.
I dont enjoy the holiday anymore though. seems like too much consumerism stress especially the madness on boxing day. noone actually relaxes over the holidays anymore. everyone just plans for boxing day.
im guilty myself.0 -
If you dont enjoy Christmas, and the build up, I would say you are turning in to a grumpy old man/woman.
Christmas is magical, a time to treasure colleagues, friends and family, and to celebrate life, whether you believe in God or not (I dont by the way lol)0
