I used to love it, but over the last couple of years have just found it an expensive annoyance. There is almost the feeling of GUILT if you refuse to spend an absolute fortune on everyone!
I still love the Christmas atmosphere, but after moving into my own house last year from rented, I didn't have a Christmas Tree (nowhere to put one in the rented flat).
The number of people who told me "You MUST get a tree"... err, no, actually I don't HAVE to, especially at those absolutely ridiculous prices.
So, I waited 'till January sales and bought a fantastic tree that had been reduced from £65 to just £5 !! !!!!!! - imagine if I'd have bought it at it's original price. Who pays that anyway?? So, for the sake of waiting I now have a bargain in true MSE style :T
The other thing that really, really gets my goat, is the Christmas Grocery Shoppers - you know - the ones who fill THREE trolleys in the few days before Christmas day !!! Why??? The shops are shut for 2 days max these days. So why fill three trolleys which ultimately fills the waste bin as the food inevitably goes off because they don't eat it?? :rotfl:
ETA: And don't even get me started about Turkey Dinners - disgusting, dry, tasteless birds.... lol“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”0 -

Ah yes those who think they will starve when the shops close for 1 or 2 days (some stores round here only close for xmas day and other are shut for xmas day and boxing day), I wonder how much of that food goes to waste ?ETA: And don't even get me started about Turkey Dinners - disgusting, dry, tasteless birds.... lol
Again I agree with you, you dont have to have Turkey as you can have whatever you like (as with the christmas tree) as you dont have to conform to tradition.0 -
:eek:All the big shops have got their Christmas stuff in. Am I alone in thinking that Christmas is an over-priced rip off? OMG, I really, really don't like it at all. Bah humbug:mad:
No, I doubt you're alone at all. But that doesn't mean you have to join in. You can despair at our vapid, consumerist society and have an enjoyable Christmas. The two aren't mutually exclusive."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

I use to ask WHY, and the answer was in case we have visitors.
But we never have any bl00dy visitors.

I like Xmas. More for the 2 weeks off work, parties, beer and good times than
any religious reason!
Wow, 2 weeks? I'd like it more if I got 2 weeks off!

I will enjoy it in my own way. I've got nothing against anybody that does love it, it's just not for me.
Some people only exist as examples of what to avoid....0 -
I don't let it worry me as I just ignore it like any of the other over commercialised claptrap we are subjected to.
I tend to start taking a bit of notice the week before it happens so I do enjoy a few days around the 25th. I found that making a point not to overdo the food and drink makes for a much more pleasant experience.0 -
i enjoy christmas now
before, i worked in retail so spent the whole christmas pretty much working, and having to deal with lots of overly aggressive customers.
But now as i don't have to work over the Christmas period, it makes a nice holiday, with a few weeks off work to enjoy0 -

I know the Christmas period gets longer and longer as years go by but a few weeks?
(Not that I'm in any way jealous.)

its also because people have a tendency to panic shop when they realise the shop wont be open for a day.
its the same when you get bad weather like snow. For days people go in buying trolly loads of stuff, incase one day they cant get out in the snow to go shopping.
Its the same over easter as well when they shut easter sunday.
the worst ones seem to be the ones that just shop once a week, they seem fine going without shopping 6 days at a time but as soon as the stores are closed they have to buy everything0
