Diddums!!! ...It doesn't surprise me that you're not bothering to defend your point, which I understood perfectly btw,...I just didn't agree with it.

People buy shares for different reasons and with different timescales -- as I've said. Some invest long term. Some take a gambling approach. Some do both.

Trouble with the gambling mentality is that people will never be able to sell at the best moment (unless by an amazing stroke of luck), so you have to be philosophical. By the time someone is able to sell their RM shares the price might well have gone up again -- who knows? Will they still be "fuming" and feeling short-changed then, I wonder?

If the first opportunity to sell is at a price lower than needed, then hang onto them, pick up the generous dividend, and sell when the price goes up again, as it surely will.

I'm inclined to agree except there's a difference between me clicking 'sell' just before the price goes up and kicking myself for it and wanting to click 'sell' at a good price and not being able to because someone else cocked up then the share price drops by the time you can sell!

Apparently the guy on the phone told her the reference number but she couldn't get it down in time and then he refused to repeat it. She also asked for a copy of the application where it says we chose that option but they refused to supply it.

We have little option but to wait for the certificate and see how the market plays until then but we will be making a complaint over the way our application was messed up.

There has been some craziness and panic, let alone grumbling and bitterness, on this thread. For me, it's been both irritating to read, but also a bit exciting - it reminds me of the heady days of the dot com boom. A time when we'd watch the shares changing values and making us rich on Teletext! I can remember one day when I turned round to someone at work and said I'd "made" £1,000 in that day.

Sadly, of course, companies fell by the wayside, and I made the mistake of getting greedy and not selling before I went away on holiday. 3 weeks later, one company had collapsed and the other had lost ground (although that one was ARM, and subsequently did make me a little bit of money!).

So am finding all this good fun, but planning to ride the waves for a decent dividend (if the worst comes to the worst) and the FTSE100 entry.

please help. I've got my reference number but how do I login to equiniti ..
  • What does entry to the FTSE100 actually mean? I'm really clueless on this, but if I do sell early I'd like to think my decision was somewhat considered.

    Sound advise there.

I think the problem with these Royal Mail shares was that initially nobody had any idea what price they might settle at........although almost no one thought they stay at the Government low selling price of £3.30.
I've learn't my lesson (Sold on Friday@£4.53) to wait until at least the official flotation date rather than sell too early.
There is strong demand for these shares and it now seems unlikely that they will settle below £4.50.......which means they will enter the Ftse 100..... encouraging more rises.

So it looks like I'll be studying the Royal Mail price charts for a while in the hope I can buy when they take a temporary dip......but for the mid to longer term Royal Mail do look a safe bet.
So I agree those getting frustrated that they cannot sell their shares yet shouldn't worry too much as it looks like you'll be able to get a good price for them for some time to come.

I worked out if you can sell via the automated phone at 0.75% commission, you'd need to sell for approx 4p higher share price via the web site with it's 1% but £17.50 min commission at current prices. The shares seem to be hovering around £4.80 by less than +/- 4p, so I would suggest just using the automated phone line and be damned!

I'm no expert, but as far as I've read they join the club of the top 100 valued companies on the stock exchange, which should boost their share price.

Kinda like being promoted in the football divisions, being promoted is good......being demoted is bad.

    That's my layman understanding anyway.;)
