MARTIN MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN WHAT BT CLAIM IS THE PROCESS FOR CANCELLING WHILST STILL IN CONTRACT.

Following the announcement of BT prices rises I decided I have had enough and started to look at moving to another provider. Although I am in contract until July next year, BT did say that customers could give notice within 10 days of the price rise announcement and not be held to the contract. I got a MAC code. However, after speaking to customer options for the 4th time, I now find out that the cancellation of the contract has to be done by BT meaning that if I go to another provider to carry out the transfer, that will not count as a BT cancellation and I will be expected to pay for the services for the remainder of my contract. Whilst I can still order a new service from another provider they will not be able to take over the line whilst I am still under contract with BT which means if I get BT to cancel, I then take the risk that I will have a gap in my services. I think this is totally disgusting and it appears to be a BT ploy to put people off moving. Does anybody have any knowledge about this that might help me proceed?

It's just another example of lack of training or deliberate confusion tactics on BTs part. As you can see above a few of us (and almost certainly plenty more) have advised BT of our intention to cancel, been told we won't incur any penalties or charges and been issued with a MAC to transfer to another provider. But we won't know if we will have further problems until we get our final bill. The T&Cs say you can leave, giving 30 days notice to cancel or 14 days for an arranged transfer.
  • steven cardwell - Thank you for the PM.
Can you tell me what the CEO's office said in response to your email?

Yesterday, prior to emailing the CEO, I phoned BT to cancel and was told no problem just go sign up with a different supplier and there will be notes on your accounts to say that you should be charged for leaving early.

I am now lead to believe that this is not the right process, bt actually has to process the cancellation.

    Any help much appreciated.

No, if you are happy to leave and pay early termination fees, you just arrange your new service (s) after giving them notice you are leaving as you have done. Pass on your mac if you have bb and are getting a new isp

I'm at work at the moment but will send you info later once im home, I've got a text with a number to phone if any queries about charges etc, I'm assuming it is just a standard number, but will probably phone that later to see if what CEO office said is what is on my account notes
  • Thanks again steven cardwell

Quentin: I am trying to cancel without having to pay the cancellation fees, that is why I am asking for advise.

  • Slightly off topic but called up sky to cancel my contract for tv. But have signed up for their broadband. After 40 mins talking to the guy he offered me broadband, line rental and tv for just over £23 a month. The broadband is £3.75 and the line just £2.40. In my eyes that is a result. Compare that to bt broadband and line rental I am going to be saving £47 a month.

Just off the phone 08005877214, that was the number in the text that Bt sent today, just a "sorry to see you go" followed by phone the number to confirm termination charges or any queries.

I've been told by them i have no charges and they will send out a bag to return the Vision+ box and router.
