MSE News: BT reveals price rises - but you can escape the hikes

  • Hi<
I have just called BT in order to cancel the contract due to the price rise. Unfortunately I have got broadband contract with them as well.
As broadband prices are not rising, I was told that I can finish or cancel contract for the line rental, but not for the broadband.
But BT would not be able to provide me with broadband services without line rental - so, what I was told I simply can't cancel the contract.

For me case is simple for any Court or Communications Ombudsman.
    1. BT is putting the prices up for the line rental.
    2. I'm not happy with it so I cancel the contract for line rental.
    3. I have cancelled contract for BT line rental due to price rise (which I'm entitled to), so thay can't provide me with broadband services, due to the price rise in line rental, and my resignation.
    4. I'm fully entitled to cancel the contract for broadband.

Unfortunately I would have to do it through Formal Complaint, and probably Communications Ombudsman. Where it suppose to be straight forward.
    Any thoughsts or ideas?

Most (all?) broadband prices are increasing. You can check yours with their price checker, although even with this info customer service agents have denied that people are facing an increase. So save a screen print so you can send it to them on Chat.

    Hi,
Thank you for that. I have checked it and broadband price is changing for my telephone number and account number. From £18 to £19.15.
But I swear yesterday when I have spoken with a consultant I was told something totally different.

  • it seems they tell everyone broadband is not increasing even when it is. You just need to point this out to them with their helpful price checker. Once you tell them that its easier to get out of your deal.

    I got the email yesterday

I have called them this morning, told i would be charged just £30, but then received an email saying i will be charged £269.71!!!

Currently on hold trying to sort it out

I got a letter through the post to the same effect so a quick call later and they said the response is auto generated and the final bill will be calculated once the services cease.

Payment will be taken 10 days after the services have ceased and they said if there is any issue with the charge then phone up the billing department who will look at the call notes and will generate a new charge of £30 only in my case.

Read the T&Cs and you will find it's definitely opt-in for caller display and 1571 and as I have an answer phone system (currently switched off) as part of DECT phones in the house, I shall switch it on come January.

As for caller display, we receive so many that just show "withheld" or "international" we shan't bother opting in and paying for a facility that has slowly become useless as the spammers and scammers are circumventing it by using international numbers or just withholding it.

TPS will stop all but the ones that ignore your request for no marketing calls and it only takes a couple of seconds to realise it's a call you don't want and to hang up.

What with the line rental hike and the other add-ons that BT are coming up with (I wonder if Michael O'Leary is one of BT's consultants), ew shall be looking to migrating to another provider next year and I suspect that mobile everything is the way we shall go.

At least with mobile when you loose service the provider doesn't hang around getting it back up and running again whereas with a land line fault it can be days and sometimes weeks before you get a service back and all because you as an individual don't count for much but when a mobile system goes down it can affect hundreds and mobile providers are not going to hang about getting them back online.

Oh Lord! I'm currently on holiday in the US and have only just found the BT email, incorrectly appearing in the spam folder, dated Oct 17. I've no idea of exactly what product I'm on with them, it's all detailed and safely held in the file marked BT in the study at home! I'll need to have that info in order to assess how this price hike will impact us & I'm not going to be back in the UK until Nov 3 - so my 10 days to decide what to do about all this will have long expired by then.
Has anyone got any ideas about how one might go about requesting an extension from BT in these circumstances?
Any guidance or suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance. AndyJ

You don't need to know how it will affect you if you want to leave without paying termination charges.

    Everyone can.

They won't extend the time allowed to cancel, so if you want to you need to contact them now.
  • Has anyone phoned and asked if they can cancel there BT contract (line rental and broadband) even if their broadband is not going up in price?
Will phone them when I get home just thought I would see how others got on.
Would be happy to write off the remaining 8 months of my 12 month line rental to go,as BT are a nightmare.
    Problems with BT :
1/ Never got connected on day 1
2/ Broadband speed 5 times slower
3/ Lost direct debit details got charged for paper billing ( after taking the first 4 payments by DD).
4/ Moved from unlimited to BB option 2 and was getting emails saying i'm close to going over my 40gb usage?
5/ Call center useless had to use forum mods to sort out above problems.

I wish I stayed with Sky,never had a single problem with them in 3 years,I wanted BT sport BIG mistake.
