Mine went down from £308 to £140 to £30 (cease charge) so keep on phoning and you will get through to someone who knows about the price increases and/or a manager who does.

Even the offers you get to stay are ridiculous, I was offered to pay £2.50 more each month on an 18 month contract to save £1.00 a month and the lady thought that was a good deal as I would keep 1571 and caller id!

With all these stories I am very tempted to end my contract now and be without phone and internet for a week or so just so I know my contract has ended.

Good luck with your battle and I hope you get there in the end.

I've given up phoneing them Ive lodged it now as a complaint and emailed the CEO about it. Cant be bothered messing around when the email says that I get out penalty free.

£30 to cease? why not just move and save that £30 too?

Has anyone raised this issue with watchdog, since BT are messing everyone around its about time they got some national negative press coverage

The cease charge is because I am not using a MAC code as I am migrating over to Virgin Media so I am happy to accept paying that fee.

I don't think anyone has gotten as far as watchdog yet but pretty sure it will happen if they don't keep to their promises and let customers leave if they have given notice within the 10 days.

    The email doesn't say that.

It was only in a (rare) post on this thread asking for info from BT that BT confirmed that via their rep, though it was subsequently retracted:

All the email said was we could cancel "without needing to pay a charge for ending your contract early".

Weasel words but significantly different from "penalty free".

I have been using the 18866 prefix number to get calls for just 5p per call regardless of time etc. I am with BT getting free evening and weekend calls and received the letter from BT saying unless I renewed my contract for a year I would be charged £3.50 per month for this service. Thinking I could still use my 18866 prefix I phoned and agreed, however on my new contract it states quite clearly "Your plan EXCLUDES calls to indirect access numbers " so I am very miffed. Jem 16 says in reply to Andysdad--"You may have to use ---the O8O8 number--" Can you tell me what this is please ?
I don't think the clause above is referring to 18866. It is referring to 0845 and 0870 numbers, which are also "free" during the times you have inclusive geographical calls. Some of these 08 numbers are used by services offering cheap international calls, etc. BT's wording just means that you'll pay the normal charges for such calls, they won't be free. That wording has been there ever since BT offered inclusive 08 calls, it is nothing new. The current wording from the BT website:
Inclusive calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers – Availability of inclusive 0845 and 0870 calls of up to 60 minutes duration (excluding indirect access numbers and dial-up internet access) dependent on residential BT Calling Plan
That's the only place it mentions "indirect access numbers".

Numbers such as 18866 are a different matter. BT haven't yet said they will block them, it's just that Ofcom has said they will no longer be forced to allow them.

Your taking about the line rental, if you paid upfront?

Ofcom advise that providers have to refund you for unused credit on your account. I would see a month or more of line rental paid in advance as unused credit on my account. I suspect Ofcom would too but I believe no ones tested it out yet.
  • Can someone help me please

I have BT phone, broadband & tv, contract up for renewal in april 2014

My line rental & broadband will be going up in jan 2014

Can i get out of the whole package?

When did BT notify you ?

You only have 10 days from receiving notice of a price rise directly from BT to terminate your contract without incurring an early termination fee.

Presumption is that that's to pay of your broadband account to its end date .

  • Yet another reason why phone/broadband really shouldn't be allowed to get away with 12/18 month min term contracts just so they can offer a financial 'carrot' to get you on board. It's all marketing and you just know the company hold all the aces.
