I don't know where you are OP, but £200 a month is very reasonable. Around here, the average cost of a room in a houseshare is £350-£385 a month.

Do we know op gets a loan?

It would be very unusual if she were not to.

A family home is not a houseshare though, is it? Its not the same way of living at all, and you can't compare parent/child relationships to landlord/tenant ones!

I don't think its that unusual, is it? I know a few people who lived at home through uni specifically so they wouldn't get into debt. Its not a huge number, and it doesn't really make much sense, but not a tiny number either.

And it's confirmed OP does, but unusual doesn't mean unheard of. :). These things may all have make a difference.

we paid their rent for them or they lived here rent free. Once they began earning they paid a nominal amount .we actually saved that money and gave it back to them to help with a house purchase, that and more besides!!

I would love to be in a position to do that Poet .

I don't for a second judge any parents who are fortunate enough to be able to do that for their children unfortunately many cant .

Depends on the family and the house share! My house shares were wonderful.

I think, btw you comment about 'real world' is spot on, and I apologise for using word 'reality' when in fact I meant rather perspective.

I agree, and if we had been in a position where they had to contribute to pay bills then, as adults, that is what they would have been asked to do.

I wasn't saying one was better than the other, just that they're very different, usually!
