How much board should I be paying?

It isn't the parents attitude that matters, it's the students'. Any decent person of that age isn't going to want their parents to keep them, just so they don't have to take out a student loan. Most students would see that as "cadging" whatever their parents think.
Yeah, really ?
Can you show me the scriptures where it is written as an absolute truth by which the whole world should live at all times and in all circumstances ?
Families are different , circumstances different. The same as it happens when parents get old and need care.
As for the op question - it can not be replied in principle because it is your mum and stepdad who's prerogative is to decide that. We could only.tell you what every.one of us would have done but we would need farore details for that. The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.0 -
Hi there I think your mum is reasonable, if its just the three of you I would say a share of the bills if this is possible. Have a chat to see why she is wanting the extra, maybe her gas/elec bill has gone up.

I paid keep when I lived at home it was no way enough looking back on it mum still would buy me clothes when out and about I paid extra when I got sky in my room.
I am a single mum and if I am in the same position when three boys are working the bills will be spilt by four for the amount of people living here. If by that stage in there life, if they think I will be able to afford for them to live here with out contributing to the household bills, they can move out and I will downsize, to a nice little one bedroom somewhereIn debt but coping:j

I think it shows DD1 that I respect the fact she is now an adult and is capable of paying her own way.

Actually, it makes sense to get rent a room scheme amount at least from them if they are financially equipped. Many are better off than the children they live with, and ihtax thresholds might make contribution to lard both make sense to cover their costs and for those concerned with transfer of assists.
Far more ethical, IMO, than those trying o get the money but not take care or financial responsibility of the parent who could self fund.
( edit..presumably in some cases careers allowances might be relevant. I was amazed to learn that the heating payment is still given to those in residential care and collected by the home( or some homes) which collectively must be super ratio in heat provision needs in some homes.0 -

I don't think it is unreasonable and I am totally against people not paying their way as I've always had to and this is the best way to be.0 -
Thanks for all your replies appreciate it. I'm just trying to seek advice really to see how much others should be paying. None of my friends pay board which is why I struggle to know how much I should be paying.
Also, I forgot to add that I pay towards the internet for the house which is another £10 and the sky tv is just a multi room box at a cost of £10 a month. I do pay my way and I am in reality....I don't think having around £120 of my pay spare a month is selfish either.0 -

Have things changed with your parent's finances that they've asked for more money?
Our household is really skint at the moment & I don't have £120 per month spare after i've paid for everything.Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0 -
It's not really a case of "what should you be paying" - what you should be looking at is "what you would pay if you do not live at home"!0

Well as an example of uni living when not at home, rent incl bills is £120/week, food about £50/month. No tv so no licence or sky. No council tax because we're all students.
So just bare minimum, food and rent, is £530/month. You have it so easy.0
