Of course, you need to remember that student loan repayments are no different if you owe £5K than if you owe £50k and that most students will never repay all their student loan anyway.

I agree with others who say that the OP is greedy if she's pretending the loan and grant aren't part of her income and is squirrelling them away rather thn being independent and paying her own way.

How on earth is trying to better myself for the future greedy? I pay for everything myself unlike a lot of people who can be funded by their parents and I don't mind this at all - check back to all my posts I've never complained about paying the money.

As for being independent and paying my own way how am I not already doing this? I work 20 hour weeks as well as studying because I want to be able to save.

I think the OP is between the devil and the deep blue sea here.

I suspect her father is advocating saving her loan for a house deposit, now we can surmise why, and even attribute ulterior motives if we wish, but he may know that her mother doesn't need the money and that it is her new partner who wants to charge more for his own reasons, or exactly the opposite scenario could be in play, or it could be some other issue which prompts his advice. Only the OP knows and she doesn't wish to disclose. It may be a legitimate concern.

Whatever the truth of it the OP is still at University, working part time and living at home, but paying rent. In addition she buys all her own food, toiletries and pays towards the Sky bill. For a student I think she is paying her way.

I am trying to think how much it would cost me to have one of my children living here if they bought their own food and toiletries. Presumably some electricity for lighting, maybe a little extra heating but if the house is heated anyway then probably not. Hot water, yes, laundry yes, cost of cooking food yes. Maybe she uses some storecupboard stuff like salt, cereal etc. Would that really come to £170 per month? I really don't think it would.

    Hunny

Your mum might not be giving you hard physical cash to support yourself (yes I know that's ironical given the subject of the thread) but if you were to pay rent to a private landlord then how much would you be able to save, if anything?

So whilst your mum might not be giving you hard physical cash then she is giving you the ability to save. Now, for whatever reason - and you haven't elaborated why - she has asked for slightly more.....but even the new level wouldn't equate to a commercial rent so you still would be able to save something.

Of course if you think your mum is fleecing you then can I suggest for the benefit of your relationship you move out now.

I would never charge my son rent to live in my home when he is older and earning money or at university. My wife and I are currently saving money for his future though he is only (almost) 3. However, we will stipulate he is not to receive the money until he is 25 years of age as I received a substantial amount of money (more than my current home is worth) at 18 and wasted every penny of it.

The OP sounds very sensible and in my opinion does not need to pay her parents rent in order to "learn about money".

    Mortgage Overpayments £5,500
  • I've read this thread open mouthed in disbelief at some of the vitriol aimed at the OP.

She's a young woman who is trying to save for her future whilst studying and working. Given that this is supposed to be a money saving site she should be congratulated for her attitude rather than roundly condemned in the most unnecessary way by some contributors here.

She is already contributing to the household and if her Mum wants her to pay more than I think the OP is entitled to have a reasonable discussion with her to find out why.

OP you sound like a sensible young woman with a good work ethic and I wish you well in the rest of your studies.

Interesting. And what if he wastes it all at 25? That's 25 years of your savings down the drain. Possibly better to keep the savings and use it to invest and it will be there when he is older and possibly wiser.

My brother in law inherited a substantial sum of money at 26. 18 months later and he's blown it all.....

    No need to apologise.

NOTHING about my post is 'bitter.' If you choose to see it that way; that's your call. You're in support of the same views as person one, so you are BOUND to say something negative about my post ;)

It makes me chuckle..whenever anyone disagrees with poet-the accusation of "bitter" is usually rolled out :rotfl:
