The cheapest prices, generally, tend to be in stores like Aldi and Lidl which don't, to my knowledge, have self-service tills.

Never been in a Lidl but if they are anything like Aldi they barely have any staff on the shop floor as well. Those that are there must have to work hard because they seem to have to do the work of 3 people each.
  • I do like going to a human to scan my shopping, and make a point of it as well. At least you can have a meaningful conversation with a person. Oh nice weather. The weathers rubbish today isn't it. You lot, you have moved the milk again *smile*.

My local tesco metro, which employs the most customer unfriendly staff known to the universe, even worse then my local walmart/asda supacentre, has those god evil tills.
Maximums I've worked out is 1 green point (so no trying to get extra points for those extra bags you 'really' have bought from home) in any case when the bag tax comes in next year I suspect tesco will get rid of it.
Maximum product coupon - between £1.75 and £2.00. It accepted a £1.75 but refused a £2. "Please wait for assistance". The till wait crazy when I tried to scan a £10 coupon from Gu. "Unauthorised Protect Detected, There is a problem with this Product" Message on screen "System Reset Required".
Maximum Points Coupon - qty 1. Any more "Please wait for assistance"

When did we decides as a society that:

    A) We would pack our shopping ourselves for free?
    B) We would not employ checkout operators meaning fewer jobs for the British economy and probably therefore less tax income, a higher benefits bill and a bigger national deficit?...
For me, it was when a significant number of those checkout operators were more interested in talking to each other, and in scanning my goods at the lowest speed they could get away with.

I defected to selfscan at my local supermarket the moment it was an otpion.

My mum is a checkout worker for Tesco's and I get to hear the other side of the story.

The people who are rude, obnoxious and ignorant. Some of the stories she has told me over the past 6 years have made me feel very concern at the state of humanity now.

It has been particually bad recently as she has continued working why receiving treatment for cancer.

She had a bottle of water on her till as the chemo left her mouth very dry and a customer put in a complaint as he considered unprofessional for a work to have a drink on view. The bottle was actually under the till and the person only saw it because of where he stood to pack his bags.

My mum always tries to be nice on the till and says hello, good morning or good afternoon. The amount of people who just grunt at her, ignore her or just glare at her is amazing.

She has had money thrown at her, people who have realised they don't have enough money for what they are buying so just walk off leaving her with a trolley load of food to get put away. The ones that have sworn at her and just generally been rude to her.

People seem to have the attitude that shop assistants aren't important enough to waste basic manners on and that is just sad tbh.

The only reason my mum works at Tesco's is as a second job to supplement her income from her main job as she is on her own and because she is a widow and in receipt of a very basic pension she is not eligable for any help in the form of benefits. She would give it up in a heartbeat not to have to deal with some of the nasty ones that come through

Instead very long queue, as only one checkout is open.

And the queues go down quick, never been in a queue in Aldi/Lidl for more than 3 minutes.

unfortuatlly customers will complain about anything
althou how anyone can see drinking water as unprofessional is beyond me, humans need water, its a simple fact.

where i worked, there was a deaf girl on the tills, and she used to get constant abuse about not listening

i've had whole shopping thrown at me before, include a bag full of tins, simply because they forgot to ask for cashback and demanded i refund the shopping and do it again

People have certainly lost the ability to be civil to another human being.

I can well believe you have had shopping thrown at you as I saw it in my local tesco recently all because the girl had run out of coupon things and she said he could get them at customer service

I think it is sadly indicative of a lack of respect in society, and at a checkout where hundreds of people pass through each day I expect there are a fair share of rude people. Hopefully some polite ones too though that make the job worth it sometimes.

My worry is the self-checkout desks may us even less polite as the whole experience is reduced to interaction with a machine and we lose a little more interaction with our fellow human being who, yes, needs a drink of water from time to time and, yes, may occasionally exchange a few words with a co-worker!

There are a few who make my mum smile normally just after someone has been rude and it helps.

I understand what you mean about self serve I can see how having to deal with machines constantly will limit interaction skills. Again when my mum is on to assist with the self service people will just stand there and grunt at her to indicate that something is wrong rather than asking.

I read ages ago that the people born in the late 90's who have grown up with phones, computers ect around them constantly have a lower vocabulary level that their parents.

They're normally pretty quick to ring the bell for help and its a cheeky game to play as if you time it right you stroll straight to the front of the newly opened till:p
