Impossible to be served by a human being in Tesco

Horrible things they are.
And heaven help you if you need to change bag during the process or want to put a heavy item in another bag. (And there are a lot of things that these tills find 'difficult'.)
Of course, the apologists say you shouldn't be using them if you are doing anything 'difficult', but there seem to be more and more small branches where you don't have an option at some times of the day.
I won't shop at the local Tesco because of this but use the Sainsburys because they have (wo)manned tills and it generally works out quicker. Even self service tills have queues and when anything goes wrong, which it seems to do quite frequently, the till in question is stuck until a service assistant can get there.
The self scan system at the Tesco superstore, on the other hand, works like a dream.0 -
and then it keeps telling you to pay because it doesn't want to take the note you're trying to feed it.0

So, you're having a go at a company for being profitable? If you don't like capitalism then I suggest you start trying to change it (Good luck with that!)MarkBargain wrote: »I try to avoid Tesco stores generally, but did go in the one opposite Liverpool Street station today to get some shopping. I noted that all the normal checkouts had been replaced by those awful automated machines, and the only person serving was at a '5 items or fewer' tobacco counter. As I had about 10 items, I had no option but to use a machine to check out. It came up with errors messages causing a red light to flash but no staff came over for some time so I was left frustrated. Some shoppers with trolleys were loading quite a bit through those machines.
When did we decides as a society that:
A) We would pack our shopping ourselves for free?
We would not employ checkout operators meaning fewer jobs for the British economy and probably therefore less tax income, a higher benefits bill and a bigger national deficit?
I won't be going back in that store.
I personally much prefer the self check out tills, I am quicker, less likely to queue and I don't have to be fake to the person serving me.
Also, these tills have been around for probably 5 years now...how on earth have you only just come about them?Don't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
I popped into Co-op lats night, the entire bank of self-serve tills was closed, not one out of 8 open, so I had to queue for 5 mins with my one item to pay at the 'normal' till. If I hadn't needed it, I would have walked out.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

I see this as a plus. No more need for the customary:
Checkout person - How are you?
Me: Very well thanks. And yourself?
Checkout person: Good thanksThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

If a customer doesn't like the (lack of) service a company provides they have a right to moan on a forum like this and to choose to shop elsewhere. That's part of capitalism.
The tills have been around years, but this was the first time I had NO OPTION but to use them. Yes, I could have put my shopping back and left but I mean I could see no other tills where I could be served properly.
Auto-checkouts may suit some people some of the time, but don't force them on all people all of the time.0 -
I use the self service tills for the best reasons, getting rid of all my loose change.0

Personally I prefer "How are you, Good thanks", to:
"Unexpected item in the baggage area"
"Please place item in the baggage area"
"Unexpected item in the baggage area"
"Stop slouching"
"Get a haircut"
"Unexpected item in the baggage area"There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
If someone wants a staff memeber to pack for them so be it. Theyre paying for the priviledge and its offered. Why not use it? It slows others down-so what? He machines are obviously to maximise profit, one member of staff to supervise multiple tills. Simple. I hate em cos they always go off"unexpected item" or alcohol "approval needed" (also needed when buying non alcholoic wine apprently ) but i use em when it suits me.0
