  • They`ll come back if you aren`t meticulous re new flour and grain storage. My flour all goes into lock and lock boxes and I never mix new with old. I also got crawlies in my barley once lol they floated to the top when I washed the barley and I did it over and over again until there wasn`t a crawlie left. I needed the barley that day and no-one knew but me

Watch out re all your grains. Every bit of mine is in a lock and lock box and all in the cool place under the stairs, neatly on shelves. Touch wood I haven`t had the blighters back for over 5 years

I use those lock and store boxes for my unopened packets in the cupboard "store" I have, but like the kilner type catch glass jars for the opened stuff. Look fancier in the cupboard too ;).

Definately the way to go seal em up.

  • I had a mahoosive infestation (I mean they moved from one cupboard to ALL of them) several weeks ago. I tried bleaching, dettol, hairdryer to cook the little beggars and I still have them now  OK they are no where near as prolific but I am hoping they will eventually starve to death as I spent a small fortune on Lock n Lock boxes from Lakeland to keep all open produce safe.
I also now put all bags of purchased flour in the freezer for 24 hours to kill any potential beasties that might be lurking.

Good luck - I still see one or two a week in the one cupboard and it gets squished with my finger!!!

I've just dug out some self raising flour from the back of my store cupboard (looking for stuff to make something wild and wonderful with) and there are little tiny brown mites wandering around in it ! What are they? Have they wandered in there or were they there all along?

    Feel everso slightly queazy!!! _pale_

Ha ha ha. They are most likely psocids.:rotfl:(pronounced 'so kids' if you're interested!).;)
They in fact live in the creases of paper and cardboard packaging, are completely harmless and a tad difficult to get rid of!!
I understand they in fact live off packaging glue!
If you start looking you can probably find them in the glued down bit at the top and bottom of all sorts of things.
Seem worse on old stock as they have time to multiply!
    Don't worry. Quite normal.:p
  • aaaagh.. its the woozles!! lol...
  • Hi there,

I had the same problem a couple of months ago and had to totally clear the whole larder cupboard, chucked all the opened packages and washed down the cupboard with hot soapy water and anti bac spray, then hoovered when dry to get them out of the crevices....

Next morning, they were back! Argghh!!

The only thing that worked was to get some Raid pest spray and put that in the cupboard and leave it to do its work. It is a "residual" pesticide, so it keeps working and it was evident it was doing it's job as the ones that had been in the crevices hiding were to be seen in a little pile in the corner dead as door nails for several mornings afterwards!

I even made sure I cleaned all the unopened tins and packets and left the cupboard empty for several days before returning things to it, just to be on the safe side. Hoovered out again before putting things back too to get rid of the blighters, albeit that they were already dead!

I was under the impression that the eggs are already in the flour ,hence the need to sieve it and that in certain weather conditons they can hatch ,thus giving you the infestation ?
  • I had these last year. Bit of a pain as I had to throw the flour away. I know they aren't harmful to most people but I had read that some people have a sensitivity to them so I wasn't prepared to take the risk for a 60p bag of flour.

When I found them I had a look online for some info and found that the Flour Advisory Bureau had some useful info that explained plainly what they were. Apparently they are the same type of creature you get crawling around inside books sometimes.

oooh no pics please - saw the real thing! hun - i had that prob as i dont use a lot of flour. I buy the smallest bag now and put the flour into a resealable plastic bag straight away! got to say i did wipe cupboard out with dettol, no idea if it worked but I felt better. havent had a problem since. were they really tiny sort of brownish gray? thats ones i had! er - that night i spent ages looking through magnifying glass at my box of cornflour, my sugars, my cornflakes etc which were all ok.
