  • I haven't seen any actual weevils but I know I've got ruddy pantry moths. Are they the same things but just different life-stages?

I've tossed out all sorts of foods, newly-bought stuff is in containers, cleaned and vinegared all of the cupboards and the damned things are still around.

I've recently had these. Apparently you bring them into your home in various foods especially flour, dry dog biscuit's, and bird food.

I also vinegared cupboards etc but the only thing that has actually worked is shop bought bay leaves. They HATE them. I blue tacked them to the door of every cupboard & have not seen any since.

As already mentioned, I also freeze flour for 24 hours routinely now.

  • Google "book lice" and compare. I've just had an infestation of these in my kitchen and they are the devil's creatures when it comes to eradication.

No amount of cleaning shifted them and I resorted to finding some spray from a specialist company (it's plant-based, organic and safe for kitchen use). I emptied the cupboards and sprayed, leaving it in situ for a fortnight (!) before cleaning again and replacing the food, having bought kilner jars and lock and lock boxes for absolutely everything. I haven't seen any bugs for the past few days but I'm not convinced they've all gone - I just know they can't get at the food any more.

Oh, and they were even living in the pack of bay leaves...

Ugh, I hate weevils. I have had them recently and couldn't figure out where they were coming from. I bake my own bread and knew it was a good idea to freeze flour, I'd been doing that for a while, and the baking cupboard looked okay. I also checked the pasta and rice cupboard and that was fine too. I even froze the cat's dried food for 24 hours but weevils were still popping up in odd places here and there.

Then I checked the spice cupboard. I had loads of spices as I used to cook a lot of curries and other spicy dishes, but for some reason I hadn't made any for a while. The cupboard had lots of little glass jars crammed in but also a few opened packets that I hadn't decanted into jars, and that was the issue. I found a packet of coriander seeds and virtually every seed had a hole in it, so I can only assume they hatched out of there *shudder*. So I think that was the origin. I hadn't realised that spices could host the eggs as well as grain etc. In future I'll probably do the freezer treatment for those too, and kilner jars for anything that comes in a larger packet than usual.

Re the bay leaves, I used to keep a packet in there but haven't bothered for months as I have a bay tree in my garden and just pick when needed. I am tempted to dry some to dot around the cupboard. Having googled book lice, they aren't the critters I am infested with. Mine are definitely grain weevils.
