    Wee, sleekit, cow'rin', tim'rous beastie,
    O what a panic's in thy breastie!
I definitely would have been one of those if I'd thought about the livestock that might have been lurking in the house at the time! :o

Hi. I had a similar problem early last year. My brother in law over from Canada got a filter paper out for coffee and noticed tint tiny black specks on it. Needless to say the cupboard was thoroughly cleaned and said papers thrown out. They returned in about two weeks time- cleaned cupboard out again only to find about a month later they had returned. Called a pest control man in who said that they were store cupboard mites which like a previous post had stated are around in things like flour, biscuits and rice etc. Normally not a problem but they hatch if the product has been around for a while. The problem we had was that they also lay eggs which you cant see and although we had cleaned the cupboard it was the eggs that had hatched that kept causing us the problem. We have been free from the little criters for months now but I now keep everything in air tight containers have have no loose bags etc.

Yes i agree with you. They are there in the first place. This has happened to me with cheap flour. Fine if you use it straight away. Always end up with weevils in it if i leave it more than a month. Even put the flour in an air tight container and it made no difference.

When I buy flour I always stick the bag in the freezer overnight just incase there maybe any creepy crawlies in it. I'm not bothered about eating dead bugs, its free protein, that's true moneysaving!

Yep.....been there. Many moons ago when I started out on my own I bought a large sack of rice (brown - but dont suppose it makes any difference) and part way through discovered I had "added extras" so to say. Buying rice in 2 lb bags ever since! - that way I use it up fast enough for this not to happen.
  • You've got to be kidding me - I started to see these horrible little things in my kitchen drawers where I kept the tea towels and dish cloths. I didn't connect them with the tubs of flour in the bottom of my pantry. I had tonnes of flour - even some open pasta ...oh for heaven's sake these bloody things are in everything.

It really bothers me. Aside from having to completely throw out all of this food, it frustrates me that I've got these !!!!!!s ...I know I'm going to be OCD about cleaning now, and I won't be able to relax. Ick!

*shiver* I wish I wasn't so creeped out by this. I think I'm off any flour products for good. I can't even imagine eating a slice of bread now...yuck.

oh heaven help me! I'm going bonkers!

As the government, banks, oil and energy companies push more and more people towards the edge and more people have to bulk-buy staples like rice and pasta, we will see more of this. Well, we are actually seeing it now.

Freezing it seems to be a good way of dealing with the little critters.

    TWO WORDS: extra protein.

Free, too! What could be more OS MSE!

Seriously, as an ex-vegan, I find it quite funny to find so many meat-eaters (making a rampant, sweeping assumption here) so grossed out by livestock in amongst their vegetable matter... Like I often say to the easily grossed-out OH, 'you'd die in a famine...'

anyhoo, i've had occasional probs, usually solved by more rigorous ALL TUPPERWARE ALL THE TIME policies, plenty of grapefruit seed extract in scalding hot water for washing out cupboards and sometimes a bit of teatree oil as well. recently i've thought about microwaving flour on purchase too.

they are in there from the plants beginning, right through its lifespan, i believe. you know, they have a right to eat too...

the OH doesn't like to hear that plants, and by extension plant foods, come from the EARTH, i.e. where creepy crawly things come from... it's what i tell him as a nightmare bedtime story...
  • can you get these bugs in your fridge? Tiny little brown specks in the bottom compartment and in the door, I thought it was some sort of dust but then I found them in boxes on top of the fridge too and they were moving. Is an antibacterial kitchen cleaner strong enough as I didn`t want to put anything too toxic in the fridge really,?

When I buy flour, I put it in the fridge or freezer for a couple of days and it seems to have prevented the little bugs from appearing in there. I haven't seen any since, touch wood! I don't hoard a vast amount of dried goods.
