Well you could get an idea of how much your car costs to run here

This site will give you petrol / diesel prices in your area (free for a certain amount of searches per month)

I dont drive and I saved about £8000 last year as a result!!

I've thought about ditching the car. An annual bus pass is about £500 which is peanuts compared to running a car.

Bus passes would work fine if you have a decent local bus service

But does your car cost £8,000 to run a year?

Exactly, that is why I still have a car.

Trip to town on the bus and home again, 1.5 hours minimum.

Using car for same purpose 30 mins maximum.
Getting forgetful, if you think I've asked this before I probably have. :rotfl:

I reckon a typical cost of running a car is around £2.5K a year and relying on public transport would cost about £900.

so how far do you travel a year to save £8,000?

To save £8,000 you must be going quite a distance or be using a toll road daily.

The trains here are so expensive it's cheaper for me to drive to work then take public transport (plus it's about a quarter of the travelling time)

'I don't drive and I didn't have to travel anywhere and I saved about £8000 last year as a result' would be more accurate no doubt.

I drive and it's saves me around £3000 a year vs public transport & that's including all costs (tax, mot, insurance, petrol etc).
  • There isn't a bus available that can get me to work on time unfortunately. I've considered cycling but its a little far and the roads are treacherous. It would save me about £1500 in petrol a year if I didn't drive the car to work.
