Yes, for mobile internet you need a smartphone.
Unlocked new handsets are usually called 'sim-free'.
Normally only networks sell their phones locked. Third parties like CPW/osps/e2save/mobiles.co.uk and p4u/dial-a-phone sell mainly unlocked phones even on PAYG/contracts, not only sim-free.

2g is an old slow technology, no good for mobile internet.

Ok so I need 3G coverage and I need to buy the phone from somewhere independent of a vodafone/o2 etc and make sure it is unlocked. The reason I want it unlocked and no contract is I may emigrate next year so I don't want to be tied into a contract here and I want to be able to take the phone, get a SIM over there and carry on using it.

    Thanks

Ok looking at TalkMobiles £10 1 month deal, I would get 500MB of data? How do I know if that would be enough? Realistically I wouldn't be using the internet while at work or at home (I have access), but when out and about to look things up.

Yes I know I could just get a new phone and stick my existing SIM in it, but the £55 bill I've just gotten means that I'm looking for better value if I can get it. Plus if I'm getting a smartphone I assume I'll need data?

How would you go about getting a phone unlocked?
    £55!!!

Crikey, I see why you are asking; they are having a giraffe.

The trick with being out and about is to try and use WiFi where possible.

Me, I have an iPhone deal with orange, it's less than £55 but not hugely cheap, and includes 1GB/month.

The new Galaxy Nexus is just around the corner, which means you can buy a Nexus 4 for £159. If I was looking for a phone today I'd be buying it.

    https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Nexus_4_8GB?id=nexus_4_8gb

Team that with a pay as you go bundle or a sim only contract.

Eg on giffgaff you get 500 minutes, 1Gb and unlimited texts for £10. Or 250 minutes, unlimited internet and unlimited texts for £12.

Yes and the month before was £45! Alright I don't have a landline at the moment, but I'm not on the phone that much, I'm sure I can get better value for money.

WiFi - Sorry excuse my ignorance, I've not kept up with technology for a few years and now I'm out of the loop, but is this what's often provided free at coffee shops and places so that you'll stay and drink coffee/eat?

I really don't want to go down the contract route at this stage as I may be emigrating next year.

    Thanks

Thanks I'll have a look at the Nexus 4. I think I was hoping to spend a little less, but I don't know what I want/need in a phone yet.

Thanks for the giffgaff info, I'll have a look. That sounds like far better value than my deal.

It was out a long time ago and will probably be pulled soon.
ATM it's one of the best value-for-money smartphones, most likely well in excess of your needs in terms of the price and specifications.
    Nexus 4 price drops £80.

Ok, what phone would you suggest?

ETA - I've just ordered a giffgaff sim card.
