decent mid range smartphone

my wildfire s has just about had it and i wondered if anyone has any recommendations for a similar but newer phone?

i mainly use it for calls/texts/email/web browsing and occasional maps/camera.

i dont want a big phone that wont fit in my pocket! i'd like a sim free phone as i'm on three but might change when it finishes.

  • Nokia Lumia 520.

Ive had one for a few weeks now. Very easy to use. Very fast and slick windows operating system. More than adequate apps for every day use, has an SD memory card slot, battery life is good (just got 4 and a half days out of mine with minimal useage).

Under £100. Very good call quality, web browser good and fast and has nokia drive and nokia maps which are also very good :)
  • thanks for the tip, i did have doubts about microsoft running on the phone a while back, but to be honest android isn't faultless. so many times my android web browser has crashed and closed all the windows. i had a quick look and apart from the above nokia the huiwai y300 looks good value but might be a bit big, the lg l3 ii optimus is compact. i suppose you get used to the size though? I mean i used an old nokia for a few days and realised how dated it was having a keypad, I am so used to touchscreens now. Any more recommendations or shall i look at purchasing a nokia 520?

Sony Xperia SP, but then again you have not specified a budget.

Have to mention the Nexus 4, if you can stretch to £159 you get a sim free truly high end phone that will last you a good while. I know you wanted compact but although the Nexus is a 4.7" screen (great for web browsing) the display has small margins so the whole phone is infact only 1cm longer than the 4" screen Huawei Y300, and just 4mm wider and a lot thinner.

I have been considering this but I've read that the WiFi range is quite poor. Do you have any thoughts on this? Ta.

Sometimes if you go on the reviews you wouldn't buy anything, I have a xperia Z, some waffle on about the screen viewing angles, and to be honest I cannot see what they are on about, when anybody looks at my handset the 1st thing they often comment on is the screen clarity. At work there is wifi near the building, this handset sits on rock solid all day long, as does the older xperia ray, not sure why worry about rumour :o

If you're considering the Google Nexus - the 8GB is out of stock..and I would seriously doubt that they'd get any more.
You can still order the 16GB version though @ £199. Which imo was the better option anyway.

When I looked the 620 is worth the extra.
  • When I looked the 620 is worth the extra.

The lumia 620 has NFC, a compass, front facing camera and a slightly better screen.

I get the impression that none of these points will bother the op as the op only wants to do the basics.

I dont know what the price difference between 520 and 620 is, but I guess it depends on budget :)

Either / or, I dont think it mattters. Both are good phones. :T

The processing power / ram etc are the same on both.

pretty sure you do get a 2 year guarantee I did not realise this after 12 months my screen started to fall out and tried to fix it myself which didn't work then when I found out about the 2 year guarantee ,nokia didn't want to know !so word to the wise!
I have a new mobile now and its not a nokia shall not go back to them for a while have you considered the Samsung galaxy ace or ace 2 the ace 2 has dual core processer ,think the nokia has a bigger processer in the 520 bit is slowed down
