    I'm starting to think MIL tells a different story to different people.

    You can bet if she has told people about lending her daughter money. then she has told people she's lent her son money too.

    Just as she hasn't said whether she has told daughter if it needs paying back or not.......odds are she hasn't mentioned that she's told herr son not to bother either.

    Both siblings are adults, both appear to be living beyond their means (evidenced by no savings to fall back on and having to borrow from Mother) and Mother talks about them both to others.

    If you really must take the moral high ground it'd probably be wise to pay the money back or be prepared for people to assume brother and sister are cut from the same cloth.

    As for the comments about the niece....... words fail me (or at least ones I can use on here about grown adults slagging off a child)
