I don't know if this is a good money-saving recipe or not but I made mini-quiches last night.

    http://allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/211/easy-peasy-pastry-for-pies.aspx

Used this pastry recipe which I halved (still managed to make twelve though). and used a cupcake tin to bake them in.

For the mixture, I used 3 eggs (leftovers from my horrendous attempt at seperating eggs for a yule log recipe). Some sandwich ham (that wafer thin honey roast stuff so nothing fancy) and some grated cheese. a wee bit of pepper (skipped salt as the ham and cheese are both quite salty).
Cooked them for about 15-20 minutes and they were perfect. The bottoms weren't soggy (good old great british bake off) and the egg stuff had set.
    :D

My mum has suggested that I maybe should have brushed some milk or egg over the edges of the pastry as they didn't colour at all. So that is something people might want to consider if they try to make it.
    :undecided

I found it to be quite cheap as a meal but then like I said, the eggs were going to get binned otherwise. Which is definitely not cost-effective.

In case you are feeling brave... this is the yule log recipe:

    http://allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/29920/christmas-yule-log.aspx

p.s: one of these days I will become brave enough to put my pictures up on here as I take pictures of everything I make as a record.

    hey mon1o!

all sounds good to me - do post up a pic if you fancy it when it's out of the oven. Just guessing you made sure the tin was greased before pouring the batter in? And if you want to make it chocolate cake next time you can add roughly 60g cocoa powder to it!

Wel jel! Have no flour left at all as it's so long since i last did a mega-shop!!

    xx

Success!!! Its out and cooling - looks and smells wonderful. :j I lined the tin with greaseproof paper before i put the mix in. I also found some icing sugar in the cupboard so instead of mixing with water i squeezed half an orange and used the juice. Also grated a bit of zest in to it. Just waiting for the cake to cool enough so I can pop it into my cake tin and ice it. I will get a photo of it too and make sure I put it up here.

Thankyou to everyone for the inspiration and the tips. Its so easy - first of many cakes i think! chocolate next time ;)

spamming this thread today so I apologise, however I found this recipe and was shocked at how little was needed to make tortilla wraps. I always assumed they would be difficult to stick to buying them from shops but I am going to try this recipe next time.

Oh... and these were my mini-quiches in case you were wondering how they turned out:

Stewby - Those mini quiches look delicious! I'm going to have to give them a try! Have you got the recipe for the peppermint brownies? They sound right up my street and with the green would make a good Halloween recipe (snot brownies or something like that I'm thinking!! :rotfl:).

I think all your bakes look brill!

    Peppermint brownie recipe:

    http://allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/4556/chocolate-mint-brownies.aspx

I omitted the alcohol and put in peppermint essence. I put in far too much peppermint essence but there is a recommendation in the comments/reviews section.
    :)

glad you like the look of them. I am learning how to cook in order to save money. My cooking is normally a bit of a disaster but it appears to be getting better. (blowing my own trumpet there).

would have looked better with four layers, but the layers turned out a bit big for that.

Ohh that looks good, what colouring did you use for the top layer?

You could have cut the top layer in half, and put one of the halves at the bottom, yum yum.

    .

Top layer is green colouring, all the colours came out slightly different to normal as the cake contains oil so the yellow of the oil effected them. Good idea about cutting layers in half, why didn't I think of that, I will know for next time :)
