So tired of ordering steaks rare and getting them well done.

I think to describe the person who cooks food in some low level places like spoons as a "chef" is a bit optimistic! 15 years ago it was whoever was around did the cooking.

Most of its just deep frying or microwaving. Something like cooking a steak to a required method does take a bit of skill.

I still think that is irrelevant. As I said before, I wouldn't expect a good quality steak at Wetherspoons, I wouldn't expect it to come with triple cooked home made chips, I wouldn't expect a bearnaise sauce that was made from scratch, but what I would expect, when asked how I would like my steak to be cooked, is for my steak to arrive as requested. If they can't provide that, don't ask me the question when I order! I would be a little understanding if I requested a rare steak and it arrived medium rare, but on one occasion I asked for medium rare and got no pink meat.

You say irrelevant but you've admitted you've been to these places and the steaks not been cooked to what you specified, which sort of proves what I've been saying. The chefs at these sort of places are in the majority not good enough to cook a medium rare steak.

It's annoying but if you pay cheap prices then you must realise you're going to get cheaper quality ingredients, and average cooking!

Trying to get a rare burger is even more difficult, but at least still technically possible here in the UK. It's illegal in Canada!

I got a rare burger for lunch on a Princess cruise ship a couple of yours ago, but only after I had signed a disclaimer!

    Steak Tartare anyone?

Yes please, I would love some steak tartare.

Fridge raider is saying. If you can not cook it rare. Do not ask the customer in the 1st place.
If your not going to cook it rare. Then do not give me the option.

It's odd, my Mum and I spent years ordering well done steaks that came out medium (not even medium-well, properly medium), often to have it brown throughout you have to say cremated. Which is ridiculous. Because I want it brown through, not crispy.

I assume a large majority of people want their steak medium and that's all a lot of these cooks know how to make it.

Be cautious with rare burgers. The reason you can have steak just about raw is that the centre hasn't been contaminated with environmental bacteria, so you can cook just the outside to kill the bugs (rare or blue). Burgers by definition use minced meat where it has all been exposed to surface environmental bacteria, and had it mixed through the patty. Rare burgers mean much higher chance of food poisoning, much higher. If you like rare meat, really try to stick with proper steak cuts.

If you want to cook the edges off a joint of meat. Then mince it and cook straight away. It should be fine.
However this is a expensive way to make a burger.

I like my meat cooked all the way through but ask for 'well done' and most places seem to think you either want a lump of charcoal or something akin to chewing on a walking boot :(

Try asking for medium well ......it's an American term really but seems to stop them from cremating it over here.

I've got to say there's only been a handful of occasions this has happened to me and I order blue.

Are you ordering with someone else who orders a cremated steak or a complex meal? Sometimes they end up cooking further just through being kept on an over warm (hot) pass.
  • I know about this problem. I like it rare but have taken to asking for it blue. To be honest i'd like it if it was just waved near a frying pan. When we went to the Czech Republic 2 years ago I got a rare steak that was fantastic. Juicy, blood pouring out when a knife was sliced through it. Cooked on the outer layer but red through the rest. It was cheap as well, just wonderful.

Not got a clue in this country.
