Okay, I've looked around a bit more, and have one more question before I go for it:
Is the Linksys RTP300 (or the WRTP54G which I think is the equivalent but with wireless) able to support 2 VoIP providers on one analogue line?
eg. https://www.voipfone.co.uk, who will port a BT number for £20 and £1.99 per month (+VAT) for incoming and some outgoing, and https://www.voipstunt.com for the Freedays inclusive calls (£10 for 120 days) to use for outgoing 01/02/03 numbers only.
And if the answer is yes, where would I find out how to configure it? I've downloaded the ATA Administration guide from here, but it's a bit, erm, well...
I have been using Skype pay monthly for a while. I am looking for a new provider which offers free 01/02 numbers and voicemail.
Signed up to Sipgrate but having trouble setting up. Can't download from their website as using Vista so dowload from software developers website then can't log in, it asks for domain etc..
My 9 year old daughter is now on the computer playing games on the internet whilst phoning and talking to her friends at the same time for up to 2-3 hours at a time hence the reason to sign up to the new package.
Would I be able to use a voip phone with VM broadband it would be mainly used by my daughter to phone her mates local in the uk what would be my cheapest option I thought voip are free, sorry but this voip is all new to me.
Also having the voip phone would free up my normal landline.

Yes, you can use a VoIP service with VM - it's excellent on cable as you don't need a phone line - so you can save, or you can use it as a 2nd and 3rd line.
I use a Linksys PAP2 ATA which you connect to a router and once set-up sounds and behaves like a normal phone service, to this you can connect up a standard corded or DECT cordless phones and you can make up extensions around the home as you can a normal line.
VoIP to VoIP calls are free as the whole call is carried over the internet, this is usually same provider to same provider or with some they have peering arrangements to you can call between certain VoIP providers for free.
When it comes to calling landlines there is some charge as it costs the VoIP providers to break out the internet out onto the PSTN - the Telco of the customer you call charges a fee for termination, so the company of the person calling that Telco's customer has to pay, so they need to pass that on same as when a BT customer phones a Virgin Media customer, BT has to pay Virgin Media a termination fee and when a Virgin Media customer phones a BT customer Virgin Media has to pay BT a termination fee, same happens with all other providers and Mobile phone providers (however the termination fees are higher on mobiles, hence dearer to call them).
If everyone is on the same VoIP provider, for example Sipgate then calls between them are free as the call is always going through the internet.
Some VoIP providers offer an incoming VoIP-IN phone number for free, some a one off charge, some it is a 0506 VoIP number, some it is a local 01 or 02 number of any area-code you wish.
There's differing pricing structures depending on the VoIP provider. Vyke for example charge 2p per entire call no matter how long you are on the call for, others offer 'free' calls but only 300 minutes per week, you have to top up €10 (Ten Euro) every 120 days, but you don't lose that €10, it can be used on chargeable calls during the 120 days or don't bother topping up after 120 days and use it then.
Tesco offer evening and weekend calls for a couple of pound or so, however all their other rates are very high compared to other VoIP providers.
With the Triple XL package for VM, you have to remember on the phone to hange up before 60 minutes otherwise you get stung with high charges.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)
I think I will ask my daughter if she wants a microphone/headset so she will be able to play the internet games hands free whilst she talks to her mates or a handsfree phone.
I need to make outgoing calls to teh stes and wondered what the best service would be.
Don't really want any monthly fee etc, and would ideally like to just add the credit via my mobile.
Also i use a mac which i know can complicate things, though i guess i could use crossover to emulate a pc.
looking to get as cheap calls as possible, though not those schemes where the other person has to also set up a number, or ring a different number etc.
I have a virtual local phone number for my business which is currently routed to Localphone.com SIP number (again local landline number). The idea is I can pick up phone call using my wifi mobile phone anywhere with internet connection. If I cannot pick up the phone calls due to no internet, the call can transfer to voicemail.
However I am experience lots of difficulty to pick up any calls with Localphone.com. Every time people ring me, my mobile only literally rings once before the call lost. I have now looking a reliable VOIP / SIP company can provide me a VOIP incoming number so that I can route to my mobile.
Any help would be greatly appreciated !!! Thanks in advance !
I don't find problems with my localphone account, but have another service provider http://www.ttnc.co.uk/ find them good
I use an ATA (analouge telephone adaptor) for my locaphone account. It has a cordless phone on it and works well
Please can someone tell me what Vyke is like? Is it true that:
a) You can buy just £10 credit which lasts 12 months?
b) Calls are totally unlimited, costing 4c each time? (i.e. not 300 minutes per week like some)
I can't decide whether to go with Vyke or with another Betamax provider like voipstunt and pay 10 Euros to get 120 days of free calls (limited to 300 minutes a week).
I'm currently with voipbusterpro which offer free calls to UK landlines for 10 Euros for 365 free days. The catches are you get charged 3.9 Eurocents for each call and you're limited to 300 minutes a week.
My other half can easily chat for 1.5-2 hours every day or every other day... 5 hours will quite likely get exceeded each week, especially with me making calls too...
Please can someone advise as Vyke looks good and I'm having trouble finding out the answers to my questions on their site...
With Vyke I still credit remaining from my initial credit back in July 2007.
It works out about 2p per call.

Unless anyone can see a flaw in this plan...
