    1) You need some form of standardised test, and a rolling road indoors is the only way I can think of to achieved standard conditions. The hill point is an interesing one though.
    2) As you'll note from the video I posted above, the test cycles do include stops, the fact there is no physical traffic light present is irrelevant.
    3) Disconnecting ancilliaries I do think should not be allowed, but running the test with things like AC switched off makes sense.

The current test results are not representative of real world driving, and the gulf between published and real world fuel economy is growing. So I totally agree with you that finding a way to make the standard tests more representative would definitely be a good thing, but doing away with standardised tests completely is definitely not the answer.

In the meantime sites like Honest John's Real MPG and Fuelly.com offer very useful additional data for consumers that are prepared to do a little research before buying.

They even disconnect alternators/fans to run the tests - that cannot be right.........obviously they run without aircon on.
At the very least - they should actually drive the cars on a road (beit an airfield or whatever) - I think that they should also actually drive the cars on a mixture of public highways/country lanes/motorways etc - with stop starts, hills etc thrown in.
They should be forced to provide real life MPG figures from real life tests.....

We have an Audi A1 TDi 1.6. My wife goes from Newark to Nottingham every day on the A46 (dual carriageway). We get a real MPG of 65 and 88 (yes 88).

    65 AND 88 eh ?

    Two questions:

    1) What speed does your wife drive at on the A46?
    2) What is the brim-to-brim average mpg that your wife achieves (not what the trip computer says)?

Here are other reported real mpgs:

Tests on real roads are impossible to carry out consistantly due to weather variations, and if public roads, traffic. The results would also vary more according to how the cars were driven. The rolling road approach enables a much more consistant driving cycle to be achieved.

Hills could be simulated with a rolling road if desired.

Don't get me wrong, I hate how misleading the published mpg data are, I'm just not convinced the solution is to simply say car manufacturers should drive on real roads.

Kia cars seem to have this "thing" about them. It's almost like a Kia aura.

    I'll get my coat. :)
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

I am curious as to how your measuring a real MPG of 88 and what distance that is over?

I can get 68mpg brim to brim on my 2013 Golf 1.6 TDI 105BHP, which is 6 mpg over the government figure, but 88mpg sounds a LOT

And if he IS getting that brim to brim then i dont understand the relevance of the 65mpg?

I'm sure he'll be along soon to explain

The slow speed will definitely help fuel economy. Can you clear up the mpg confusion as well?
