    Picture isnt showing?

If you cant get it to work, just explain it to us

It's a picture. People use them occasionally, they can be taken in a lot of ways!!;)

It's a link so should have worked.... 72.7MPG taken the other day oni way home Nottingham - Newark.

I have opinions, you have opinions. All of our opinions are valid whether they are based on fact or feeling. Respect other peoples opinions, stop forcing your opinions on other people and the world will be a happier place.

If you were happy buying an older car (I think they stopped selling them in 2005) then an Audi A2 with the 1.4 TDI engine might be worth a look? You'll probably consider them too old, but they'd obviously be cheap to buy.

A Polo BluMotion is another obvious contender. Like the Fabia Greenline, this model attracts quite a price premium. It probably does make sense for your high mileage, but do some sums. Three people in the back of a Fabia or Polo would probably be quite cozy though?

Here's some more real data for the Kia Rio:

    http://www.fuelly.com/car/kia/rio/2012/diesel%20l3

Fuelly.com is another place to look for real world mpg. Of course you never have a way of finding another driver who will be driving in the same way you would though.

Don't let me put you off the Rio completely. All I was merely trying to do earlier was warn you not to be banking on getting 88 mpg, and basing decisions on calculations using this figure. I'd have done the same whichever modern car you were looking at.

Also, with the amount of driving that you'll be doing I'd suggest that a comfortable seat and driving position should be key factors in which car you choose, not just mpg.

I'd actually prefer to buy something a few years old as I hate wasting money and depreciation is a big waste.

The Kia Rio hasn't been around long enough with the current engine to be worth getting second hand, I can't see any available for more than a few hundred quid off the cheapest online deal for a new one.

The Skoda Fabia is available for about £8k second hand, 1-2 year old versions so I'd go for those over new as the new diesel is silly money.

Thanks for the tip re the Audi, will take a look.

I've already looked at the Polo and the premium in price appears to be more than that of the Skoda but will have another look at it.

Skoda seems good value as it comes loaded with extras, cruise control being a good example, very handy that!

(It is helpful to note that motorguy's 68 mpg figure is for driving at 55 mph though.)

Yes, pretty much a steady 55mph and i do tend to let that creep up a few mph on motorways so that i dont inconvenience lorries. :)

Well clearly it didnt !!!!ing work or i'd have been able to see it?

Perhaps in the time you took there to try to be a smart !!!! you could have fixed it?

Oh, and a picture of the reading on your car showingh 72.7MPG over a 20 odd mile journey is NOT a 'real world' figure.

A 'real world' example would be taken over a full tank of fuel brim to brim and calculated out.
  • In my experience on board computer's are about 10% optimistic when it comes to MPG, albeit I've only had experience of two cars with that feature.

A lot are as low as 2-4% out (mine reads about 3.4% out) but they can be wildly inaccurate as you say.

BUT it does need to be over a much longer timeframe than just one journey to get an accurate ish reading.

My car has a MILES LEFT facility on its computer
If I leave on a 50 mile round trip and the computer says 100 miles left - often, after driving those 50 miles - I will have 120 miles left when I return home !!!
    Explain that.

Because when you start a journey it bases its miles left calculation on the last 'x' miles of your previous journey.

If you previously did a journey say, round town that you only got 25mpg on it would use that as a basis. If you then do a long run its updating the average MPG as you drive so it might rise to 50mpg, so your miles left number rises significantly.

it's essentially calculating it as distance = (remaining fuel * average mpg). If you increase your mpg your remaining distance will also increase, so it's just a best guess based on the information it has.
