And that stops you walking how?

Now you're back, could you clarify how your calculating your MPG?We have an Audi A1 TDi 1.6. My wife goes from Newark to Nottingham every day on the A46 (dual carriageway). We get a real MPG of 65 and 88 (yes 88).0 -

I drive at a fairly constant 55mph on my commute. If i were to hit 80mph on the motorway bit and pass as many cars as i could I'd be in work probably 7-10 mins earlier and home 7-10 mins earlier - we finish up about half five no matter what time we're in for, but on both accounts i'd probably arrive in or home stressed out, so what i'd save it time, i'd lose in 'wind down'.
Plus i'd lose a good 10mpg on my economy.
Better to stick a good cd on, and just take it steady (god i sound like my dad!!)0 -

Ahh but the other one is Cabriole - ie) Walking in a straight line is nigh on impossible - I am forced to walk in circles - so walking to work takes way too long !!!0 -

Or else DEAD or at least £100 worse off - the legal limit is 70mph...0 -
In case there is confusion, I drive slower/more econonically on my daily commute and when I have time on longer runs too to improve mpg (for environmental as well as financial reasons). Earlier I was just disputing gilbert and sullivans point that it doesn't take longer to drive slower, and noting that the time consideration is not always irrelevant.I drive at a fairly constant 55mph on my commute...0 -
Whether the legal limit is 70 mph or not, I think we all know perfectly well that no road traffic officer is going to stop someone on a UK motorway for doing (an indicated) 80 mph. I generally drive at 60 mph on motorways, but drove at 80 mph for many years, and still will when I want to get somewhere quickly.Or else DEAD or at least £100 worse off - the legal limit is 70mph...
I'm inclined to suggest that actually driving at 55 mph is more dangerous than 80 mph since it is slower than HGVs travel at, causing them to overtake.
Not that any of this helps the OP choose a car though!
(It is helpful to note that motorguy's 68 mpg figure is for driving at 55 mph though.)0
