Just been up the loft and found a big one with wasps crawling all over it about the size of a football, came down and searched it on here and my daughter then said there is 2 in the playhouse:eek: . Went out and they were the size of ping pong balls...whacked them down ran like the clappers then came back, nowt in it and chucked them over the fence...I think I will leave the one in the loft??? Not sure, my heart rate is slightly faster than usual...but I would try the whack and run idea wear somethings big like a hooded dressing gown or something and long trousers with elastic bands on the bottom of the legs??? oh man I feel sick!!!:rotfl:

Don't whack it - you will just have a lot of very angry wasps who will probably try to rebuild their nest where it was. I would wait until nightfall when they will all be in the nest and not active and puff in some wasp killing powder as per the instructions.

As it is in a play house, when the wasps are dead I would remove the nest and contents and wash the area where the nest was down to be sure there is no poison there before letting children back in. Normally you just leave the nests as they are not reused.

In the meantime don't panic. If you resist whacking the nest and leave the wasps alone they will not be too annoying. Don't try anything until they are quiet tonight!

Flea / insect powder works. They track it into the nest and kill everything that enters or leaves.

A deterrent, apparently, is (from http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A225839):
"Take a paper bag as big as your head and blow it up. Tie off the end so it retains its shape and hang it near where you do not want them to go. The wasps will think it is an enemy nest and stay away. However, wasps are not stupid, just a little slow, so when you have finished whatever it is you do not want the wasps to participate in, take down the bag otherwise they will see through the ruse."

As for wasp genocide, as Markyt suggests, most insecticides should work.

You also seem to have a stray apostrophe problem as well as wasps. ;)

Me being pedantic. ("wasps" rather than "wasp's", and "what's a" rather than "whats a"). :)

even more pedantic, and say, "an" apostrophe, not "a" apostrophe =]

Also correct capitalisation such as "Even more pedantic" than "even...". :D

You can get wasp traps, I think I have seen them in betterware's catalogue.
Basically a bottle of something sweet that they can fly into but fall in when they try to crawl the sides to escape. If you google, you'll probably find instructions for home-made traps.

Can't pitcher plants trap wasps as well as other flying beasties?
