A bit of simple research before you chose the car would have prevented the problem from occurring. You ought to take any comment made by a car salesman with a pinch of salt.

I agree and not something I would do again, I did think that as I had been told by two different people they must be right!

The salesperson has just told me that they didn't realise the emissions went up on the new model and so did misquote me.

Waiting to see what happens next.

I would attempt to use the incorrectly given information to get a free service once a year whilst you own the car.
I would politely mention trading standards not being impressed, by blatent mis information.
Remember that you have no witnesses, so softly softly will be needed.

I would its wholly unlikely the O/P would get free servicing for as long as they own the car

And likewise i dont think they're going to give a monkeys about TS as nothing was in writing.

You *might* get some sort of a goodwill gesture but certainly not of the scale you think and not on the threat of ringing TS.

The issue is that a car was sold to me without my being aware of the actual cost of road tax.

With respect its YOUR responsibility to know, not theirs to tell you, so i wouldnt be trying to play that card, and its certainly not "being missold"

As i said earlier, try for a goodwill gesture. If they do give you one, it will be in an attempt to sweeten the situation for you, not because you have any real case.

If costs were a big consideration, the biggest one is depreciation and again, with respect, any cost saving there was on tax will be totally dwarfed by the depreciation on a new Fiat - they're certainly not reknowned for their ability to hold their value.

I think you need to maintain a sense of perspective here as it does seem like you're going to let what is a very minor cost in the grand scheme of things start to ruin your experience of owning a new car.

I think the OP agrees that they should've done a bit more research before buying the car, but what's done is done now and there's nothing that they can do.

Like others have said, £75 is very little in the grand scheme of things when it comes to owning a car, heck - that's not much more than filling your car up these days! I would try and see what little you can get from the dealer but if they won't give you anything then I wouldn't push it any further as it's just your word against theirs.

Buying a new car should not be on the basis it will save you money - in fact quite the opposite will happen. The rate is which your new car will depreciate over your old car will make the discrepancy in road tax look like pocket change!!

I'm kinda wondering what use salesmen are because according to MSE posters, it would seem you simply cannot accept a salesman (whose job it is to sell something therefore should really be in receipt of all the pertinent facts) to give you accurate info and you must always check if what they say is true.

There have been several threads over the past few months where salesmen have given inaccurate info and the sale was made on the back of it.

When did we all just absolve salesmen of any responsibility and shift the onus onto ourselves?

Isn't is about time salesmen were actually held accountable for what comes out of their mouths? I just don't get why people are so quick to 'let them off' and tell people they should have done x,y or z.

Would you accept such shoddy service from people employed in other areas? Or would you expect them to know what they were talking about?

I'm genuinely bemused as to why it's not a bigger issue for people. If I offered to sell you a static caravan and told you the site fees were £100 but after the sale went through you found out the site fees were really £500, would that be ok too? Or would you hold me responsible for giving you inaccurate information?

Salesmen should be the ones to check their info, before they impart it as fact. It really doesn't matter if it's £500 or *only* £75....the basic fact remains the same.

I was lucky enough to buy a new car last week, it is a 63 plate and so had been unregistered when I agreed the purchase.

    But, erm..
The whole purpose of my purchase was to lower my outgoings

How is buying a brand new 63 plate car lowering your out goings?

In the grand sceme of things, the £75 is a small drop in the ocean compared to the 20% you lost when you drove it off the forecourt to be honest.

The government has done a wonderful job in convincing the population that these low VED vehicles will save them money whilst saving the planet. Simple logic and maths is obviously not a strong point. One born every minute as they say ;)

Why would you lose 20% by driving it off the forecourt?
