Please help - have I been misold a car?

I was lucky enough to buy a new car last week, it is a 63 plate and so had been unregistered when I agreed the purchase.

It was from a major dealer and 2 sales reps told me the road tax was £30 per annum, I have just had a look at the DVLA website and it is in fact £105 per year.

The whole purpose of my purchase was to lower my outgoings, and this was made clear to the sales people. This will now cost me £ 75 per year more than I was expecting. I haven't yet been able to speak to the sales as voice mail keeps picking up when I call.

Any advice would be most welcome please.

Thank you

IF IF IF the £30 per year road tax was your main reason for buying the car then you could try to reject it. But to be honest i doubt you could make that stick.

You could see if they will offer you a goodwill gesture, for example a free service or perhaps some cashback to cover the extra costs?

    In writing or verbally?

What do you want the dealer to do?
  • Thanks all for your comments.

The quote was given verbally - and I don't know what I want the dealer to do.

I swapped from a Renault Megane Scenic to a Fiat Punto. I intended downgrading and said to the sales rep - I want a smaller car, cheap or free road tax, petrol and insurance.

I know it is still cheaper than my old car but not what I was expecting. I only looked it up as I needed the co2 for my parking ticket, at least I know sooner rather than later!

It just doesnt seem right that they have said something completely incorrect and not even close!

I will have to keep ringing and see what they say!

    Thanks again

Car tax from £30 a year. If you chose the right engine it would be £30 a year.

But £75 a year is nothing, You just lost £2000 buying it. In 3 years its worth half what you paid.

Doesnt that put £75 into the chicken feed pile?

I know that car tax is from £30 per year, actually it is from nothing, depending on the engine. However, the point is that I was told twice that the tax was £30 when it is not.

I know that cars depreciate the moment you drive off the forecourt and you're right £75 per year is nothing, but, that is not the issue.

The issue is that a car was sold to me without my being aware of the actual cost of road tax.

    Thanks for your comments

What model and engine of Punto did you buy? There is always the outside chance that the DVLA website is showing the wrong information.

A bit of simple research before you chose the car would have prevented the problem from occurring. You ought to take any comment made by a car salesman with a pinch of salt.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
  • I would attempt to use the incorrectly given information to get a free service once a year whilst you own the car.
I would politely mention trading standards not being impressed, by blatent mis information.
Remember that you have no witnesses, so softly softly will be needed.
